=== Life Sketch ===
John Neville, future Marquis Montagu and Earl of Northumberland, was born to Richard Neville[1] and his wife Alice Montacute (also Montagu, Montague) [2], only daughter to the earl of Salisbury, Thomas de Montacute [3]. Richard became de jure uxoris earl of Salisbury after his father-in-law’s death in 1428.
John Neville was Richard and Alice’s third son and born between 1428 and 1425. He was brother to the infamous ‘kingmaker’ Richard Neville. He was knighted at the age of 18 by Henry VI at Greenwich in December 1449.
In the 1450s he fought with his Yorkist Neville relatives the Lancastrian Percys in battles that led to the Wars of the Roses (listen to this interesting interview on BBC regarding the latest [2000] research on the Wars).
On 25 April 1457, John married Isabel Ingoldesthorpe, daughter of Sir Edmund of Borough Green, Suffolk. John and Isabel had two sons and five daughters. His sons were George, son and heir, and John who died in infancy. His daughters were Anne who married Sir William Stonor; Elizabeth who married (1) Thomas Scrope of Masham and (2) Sir Henry Wentworth; Margaret married (1) Thomas Home and (2) Sir J. Mortimer, and (3) Charles Brandon, duke of Suffolk—they eventually divorced; Lucy married (1) Sir Thomas Fitzwilliam and (2) Sir Anthony Brown[e]—their grandson also Anthony became Viscount Montagu in 1554; Isabel married (1) Sir William Huddlestone of Sawston and (2) William Smith of Efford, Staffordshire.
