SIR KNIGHT JOHN STANLEY was born about 1423 of Elford, Staffordshire, England, to Thomas Stanley (1392-1463) and Maud de Arderne (1398-1429.) He married (1) Cecelia de Arderne, 1443; (2) Elizabeth Matilda Vernon, 1452; (3) Anne Hansacre; (4) Dulcia Legh.
At age 5 Sir John married Cecilia De Ardernes from his mother's family.
John Stanley died about 1474 of Elford, Staffordshire, England, age 51.

Sir John was said to be aged 40 and more in1463; an adult by 1446. He possessed a string of manors and lands in several counties. He was King's Esquire, Sheriff of Staffordshire, Knight of the Shire for Staffordshire, Ranger of the King's Forest of Cannock, heir to his father; and also heir to his cousin, Richard Stafford of Babbington, c1428-46.
He fought on the Lancastrian side at the battle of Blore Heath in 1459. However he fought on the Yorkist side at the battle of Tewkesbury in 1471, where he was made a Knight Banneret.
He married thrice.
He married, firstly, Cecily Arderne, by dispensation dated 1428, when both bride and groom were children.

• John, Esquire of Elford, Clifton-Campville and Pipe, Staffordshire, Aldford, Etchells and Alderly, Chshire, Aston-sub-Edge and Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire. Son and heir of John Stanley and his first wife, Cecily Ardene.
He married (2nd), after 1446 but before 16 Feb 1451/2, Elizabeth Vernon, widow of John Vampage Esq, and daughter of Sir Richard Vernon of Haddon, Speaker of the Commons.

After 1471 he married (3rd) Anne Horne, widow of Sir William Harcourt of Maxstoke. They had no issue.
Sir John was made a banneret when fighting for the Yorkists at Tewkesbury in 1471 (having previously fought with the Lancastrians at Blore Heath).
He died on 29 June 1476 and was buried at Elford, leaving a Will, and a widow, who remarried and had several children.
John married before 1470 to an unidentified wife. They had one son and three daughters: John, Anne, Margery and William Staunton and Elizabeth, wife of William Ferrers.
In 1475 he went to France in place of his father, a man at arms with six archers. In 1484 he was sued by his distant Arden cousins, Richard Wrottesley and Robert Leigh, for the manor of Aldford, Cheshire.
His daughter, Anne, would marry Sir Christopher Savage.

ELIZABETH MATIDA VERNON was born about 1427 of Peak Forest, Derbyshire, England, to Sir Richard Vernon VII (1390-1451) and Lady Benedicta Ludlow (1394- 1427.) She married (1) *John Stanley about 1452 of Staffordshire, England; (2) Nicholas Montgomery III.
Elizabeth Vernon passed away about 1480 of Derbyshire, England, age 53.
