Joan Gousell (Goushill) was the daughter and coheir of Sir Robert Goushill of Hoveringham, Nottinghamshire, by Elizabeth, the twice widowed daughter of Richard FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel. Elizabeth's first marriage was to Sir William de Montagu, and her second to Thomas de Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk.
Joan married Sir Thomas Stanley, KG, Lord of Lathom and Knowsley, 1st Baron Stanley, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, King's Chamberlain, Justice of the Counties of Chester, Flint and North Wales. Sir Thomas Stanley was the eldest son and of Sir John Stanley and Isabell Harington, daughter of Robert de Harington and Isabel Loring. Joan's husband, Sir Thomas, died on February 11, 1458/1459. It was through the effort of Joan Gousell's and Sir Thomas Stanley's sons, Thomas and William who turned against Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, and their son-in-law Sir John Savage who was commander of the left wing of Henry Tudor's army that gave the crown to Henry Tudor.

Thomas Stanley, Knt., of Lathom and Knowlsey, co., Lancaster, Lieutenant of Ireland, Chamberlain of North Wales, Knight of the Shire for Lancashire, 1st Lord Stanley (1456), K.G. (1457), b. in or before 1405, d. 11 Feb. 1458/9.[7] Faris notes that he and his wife had four sons and three daughters. They were ancestors of H.M. Elizabeth, the late Queen Mother, in at least five different lines.[8] The eldest son, Thomas, was 1st Earl of Derby, a title still carried by his successors. He m. Joan Goushill, b. about 1401 (aged 2 years at her father’s death in July 1403), living 1460,[9] daughter and coheiress of Sir Robert Goushill, of Hoverinham, co. Nottingham, by Elizabeth, daughter of Richard FitzAlan, 4th Earl of Arundel. This couple was ancestral to Oliver Mainwaring in two different lines: ◾through their son, John, below; ◾through their daughter Katherine, wife of John Savage.
He held the office of Constable of Chester Castle.1 He was invested as a Knight circa 1431.1 He held the office of Lieutenant of Ireland between 1432 and 1436.1 He held the office of Controller of the Royal Household in 1439.1 He held the office of Chamberlain of North Wales in 1439.1 He held the office of Justice of Cheshire, Flintshire and North Wales in 1443.1 He held the office of Chief Steward of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1448.1 He held the office of Warden of Calais.1 He was created 1st Lord Stanley [England by writ] on 15 January 1455/56.1 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1457.1
Notes: Knight of the Garter. Succeeded his father in Mann and his other estates in 1432. He had been knighted some years before his father's death. In the same year he was appointed Lieutenant of Ireland for six years, and shortly afterwards Comptroller of the King's Household. During the first year of his rule in Ireland he called together a Parliament for the redress of grievances; but, being called to England by the King's command soon afterwards, that kingdom fell into great disorder, and he was obliged to return to it in 1435, when he successfully repressed a serious revolt. In 1441 he was appointed one of the Lieutenant justices of Chester, at a salary of £40 per annum. He was one of the Commissioners who treated with the Scotch for a truce in 1448, and, when it was concluded, he became one of its conservators. He also served on a commission for the custody and defence of the town and castle of Calais from 1450 to 1455. During the year 1451 he held the office of sole Judge of Chester, and in 1452 he was commissioned to treat for a new truce with Scotland. In 1456 he was summoned to the House of Peers as Baron Stanley, being made Lord Chamberlain of the King's Household, and, in the following year, one of the Council of Edward, Prince of Wales. He was again appointed one of the Ambassadors to treat with the Scotch in 1460, "but, dying the latter end of the year, the nation was deprived of this very great and valuable person, and the King of one of his best subjects... He was brave in the field, wise in the Senate, just to his Prince, an honour to his country, and an ornament to his family". He married Joan, daughter and heiress of Sir Robert Goushill, by whom he had issue three sons, Thomas, William, and John; and three daughters.
Lord Stanley married Joan Goushill, the only daughter and heiress of Sir Robert Goushill and Elizabeth FitzAlan, daughter of Richard Fitzalan, 11th Earl of Arundel. They had six children, three sons, Thomas, William, and John and three daughters. He died in February 1459 and was succeeded in the barony by his eldest son Thomas, who was created Earl of Derby in 1485. His third son the Hon. Sir John Stanley was the ancestor of the Barons Stanley of Alderley.
