On 12th March 1420 at Edinburgh castle "John de Sancto Claro de Hirdmanstoun" witnessed a charter of Archibald, Earl of Douglas, to Archibald, brother-german of Adam Hepburn, Lord of Hailes of the lands of Flemington in the barony of Drumsergare, Lanarkshire.[1]
This Sir John St.Clair is noted as in possession of Herdmanston, Carfrae, Kimmerghame and the barony of Polwarth. There is a Precept by Adam Hepburn, Lord of Hales (sic), Knt., and Steward of the Earldom of March, giving sasine to John St.Clair, son and heir [apparent] of [this] John St.Clair of Herdmanston, Haddingtonshire, and Katherine his spouse and the survivor of them, in the lands of Polwarth, Berwickshire, with pertinents, lying within the Earldom of March, dated at Hailes, 1st January 1443/4.[2]
"John de Sancto Claro of Herdmanstoun, armiger", is the leading witness in a charter of Sir George, Lord of Setoun and of Longniddry, Knt., signed at Setoun 20th June 1449.[3]
John Sinclair, Lord of Herdmanstoun, leased a tenement in the Canongate on 20th May 1462.[4]
"John de Cancto Claro, Lord of Herdmanstoun", was the second witness (after William Douglas of Drumlanrig) of a charter to Robert Charteris, Lord of Amisfield, dated 17th October 1463.[5]
"John Sinclare of Herdmanstoun" was one of the jurors in a dispute settled in favour of George Innes, Earl of Rothes, confirmed by the King on 15th October 1464.[6]
