=== Research Notes on John Saltmarshe ===
"John Saltmarshe" is listed in the book "History of the Township and Family of Saltmarshe in the East Riding of Yorkshire" by Colonel Philip Saltmarshe (1853-1941), which was "Printed for Private Circulation Only by Ben Johnson and Company, Yorkshire", England in 1910. This book states the following in the "Key Pedigree of the Senior Branch of the [Saltmarshe] Family" (page 83): "John Saltmarshe [was the son of "Edward Saltmarshe (II)" and "Elena d. of John Portington"] b. 1455. m. 1483. ob.1513. = Margarent d. of William Borough."
The marriage of "John Saltmarshe" and "Margaret Borough" took place in 1483 and is listed in the book "History of the Township and Family of Saltmarshe in the East Riding of Yorkshire" by Colonel Philip Saltmarshe (1853-1941), which was "Printed for Private Circulation Only by Ben Johnson and Company, Yorkshire", England in 1910. This book states the following in the "Key Pedigree of the Senior Branch of the [Saltmarshe] Family" (page 83): "John Saltmarshe [was the son of "Edward Saltmarshe (II)" and "Elena d. of John Portington"] b. 1455. m[arried]. 1483. ob.1513. = Margarent d. of William Borough."
"John Saltmarshe" is described in the book "History of the Township and Family of Saltmarshe in the East Riding of Yorkshire" by Colonel Philip Saltmarshe (1853-1941), which was "Printed for Private Circulation Only by Ben Johnson and Company, Yorkshire", England in 1910. This book states the followiing in Chapter VIII: "John Saltmarshe, of Saltmarshe and Thorganby, the first mentioned in the Heralds' records, was the eldest son and heir of Edward Saltmarshe (II.), and was born, at Thorganby probably, in 1455 [as he was 26 years old at the death of his father Edward in 1481]. At the death of his father he succeeded to the family estates subject to the life interest which his brothers Elnard and Thomas had in the property at Maunby and Newton Morrell respectively. In his youth it is not unlikely he resided at one of the North Riding manors, the proximity of which to Borough Hall probably brought about the marriage with the owner's daughter. He espoused in 1483 Margaret, daughter of William Borough of Borough, by Maude his wife, daughter of Roger Lassells of Sowerby." (Note: According to other heraldic visitation-based pedigrees, Maude Lassells was the wife of William Borough's grandfather, also named William Borough (1371-1442.)
Heraldic Note: The Saltmarshe Chapel in the Minster Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Howden, Yorkshire, contains a beautiful glass window pane which displays a vertically divided ("party per pale") colored shield that displays the "Saltmarsh" arms and the "Brugh" arms (that shows five swans).
Geographical Note: The travel distance between Saltmarshe to Howden, Yorkshire, is only about six miles.
Research Note: The following historical information is not correct, as "John Saltmarsh" married "Margaret Borough" and not "Alice, or Lucy", as follows: The marriage of "John Saltmarsh" and "Lucy Burgh" is listed in the book "Pedigrees of The County Families of Yorkshire, Volume II, North and East Riding" (compiled by Joseph Foster, London, 1874, online page 326: https://archive.org/stream/pedigreesofcount03fost#page/n325/mode/2up) which states that "John Saltmarsh, of Saltmarsh" was the son of "Robert Saltmarsh" and that he was "buried 16 August 1513", and that John Saltmarsh married "Alice, or Lucy, one of the daughters of William Burgh, of Burgh Hall" as mentioned in "articles dated 1 September 1483". According to this pedigree, John and Lucy Saltmarsh had four children: Edward, Anthony, Audrey and Margery.
