  It is not clear that Diego Gomez used any surname during his life. His patronymic, Gomez, was effectively part of his personal name rather than an inherited surname, and his father, siblings and children had a range of different patronymics. As to 'de Toledo', Diego appears by this designation in a chronicle, when acting on a national stage, but in TOledo documents he appers without the toponymic. It is thus unclear if this was a formal part of his name, or if the chronicle was simply stating that he was from Toledo.
