- The+origin+of+the+Montgomery+name: with note: "Scotland magazine" states the belief that the Montgomery clan of Scotland originated with a Viking named Gomeric (otherwise referred to as "Gomerici", "Gumarick" and Gommeri). Gomeric settled on a hilltop estate in Normandy which was called "Mount Gomeric", or “Mont Gommeri”, which eventually evolved into the Montgomery family name.
The majority of historians opt for a Scandinavian origin of the Montgomery family, according to Luc De Boever, who wrote "The Montgommerys from the Vikings to our Present Day".

Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania By John W. Jordan
Pg.1136
Sir John De Montgomerie, second son of Sir John and Elizabeth Eglinton, succeeded to the lands and titles of his father and mother in 1398, and is referred to as eldest male heir and chief of the French house of Montgomerie. He was one of the chiefs of the Scottish army which invaded England in 1402, and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Halidon Hill. Five years later he was in Scotland and introduced the reputed Richard II, of England, to Robert II, of Scotland. On the accession of James I, after his long imprisonment in England, Sir John de Montgomery (2) was among the nobles of high rank who were arrested on suspicion of having profited by their sovereign's imprisonment and brought before the Parliament held at Perth, March 12, 1425. He was, however, released immediately and restored to high favor, being on the the jury to try the Duke of Albany, and was commissioned to reduce the fortress of Lock Lamond, held by Albany's youngest son, James Stewart. He married Margaret, daughter of Sir Robert Maxwell, of Caerlaverock, the ancestor of the Earls of Nithsdale, and died prior to November, 1429, leaving three sons and four daughters. His second son, Sir Robert de Montgomerie, became Knight of Giffen, a barony given by Robert II to Sir Hugh Eglinton, and brought into the Montgomerie family by Robert's grandmother,-

Note: An article about the history of the Montgomery/ie clan."The Montgomery clan is thought to have originated with a Viking named Gormeric, who settled on a hilltop estate in Normandy called Mount Gomeric. This eventually evolved into the Montgomery family name.
Generations later, after the Norman Conquest in 1066, Roger de Montgomerie, an advisor to William the Conqueror, arrived in England. He was given the titles of Earl of Chichester, Arundel and Shrewsbury. He owned over 100 manors, most of Shropshire, took 3 per cent of the country’s GDP, and had a county in Wales (Montgomeryshire) named after him.
The first of the family in Scotland is believed to have been his grandson Robert, who, along with two younger brothers, came north with Walter Fitzalan, the first High Steward of Scotland, in the reign of David I. He received a grant of the manor of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire, which his descendants owned for seven centuries."
