DRUMINNOR CASTLE, one mile south-east of Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, consists of a keep and tower that has been much altered and was first built by the Forbeses in the fifteenth century. It was modified in the sixteenth century when it was made into an L-plan and there have also been later alterations. The Forbeses feuded with the Leslies, Setons and the powerful Clan Gordon, and twenty Gordons were killed at a banquet held at Druminnor Castle in 1571. In 1770 Druminnor Castle was sold and the Forbes family moved to Castle Forbes.
CASTLE FORBES, a few miles north east of Alford, Aberdeenshire, was once a tower house but was replaced with a large castellated mansion of 1815.

1st Lord Forbes, of Drumminor, Aberdeenshire. He accompanied Alexander Stuart, Earl of Mar, and Sir Walter Lindsay on a journey to England to tilt with Lord Beaumont in 1408. He was celebrated by Andrew de Wyntoun as one of four Scottish knights and win, gaining for himself great commendation from this event. He was given charter to the lands Edinbancory and Craiglogy on November 8, 1402 by Isabel Douglas, Countess of Mar, and confirmed by King Robert III, on June 23, 1405. These lands had also been charted in 1364 to Sir Alexander's great-grandfather. Alexander fought in the Battle of Harlaw in 1411 with such success that General Alexander Stuart, Earl of Mar, befriended; him. He followed the Earl to Flanders where they engaged in battle under the Duke of Burgundy. He was also given a safe conduct in Dover on June 9, 1421 for entry to and from England, and another in October 1421 permitting him to pass with 40 men at arms and attendants to 100 persons, and to visit King James in France under the control of King Henry V. He received charter for the lands of Fodderbirse in Aboyne from John, Earl of Buchan. He was granted the lands of Alford by Alexander, Earl of Mar in 1423; granted a new charter for the lands and Barony of Forbes on October 16 1423 by Regent, Murdoch of Albany; granted the lands of Easter Cluny in 1425 by William, Earl of Angus, Elizabeth's brother; granted the lands of Alford and Edinbanchory, the lands and Barony of Forbes, the lands of Kearn and others in the Earldom of Mar, on October 6, 1431; and granted the lands of Ballindurno and half of Balshangy with the mill of Torquhonochy in 1431 by Elizabeth Keith, heiress of the Barony of Aboyne in consideration for his help in establishing her right to her inheritance. Elizabeth's daughter who retained the inheritance married Sir Walter Seton, who changed their name to Gordon and became a thorn in the side of the Lord Forbes for many centuries. Alexander was Lord of Parliament between October 1444 and July 1445.

_________________________________
Alexander Forbes, first Baron Forbes (d 1448), was the eldest son of Sir John de Forbes of that ilk. The lands of Forbes in Aberdeenshire gave name to the family, who trace back their ancestors in it to the time of King William the Lion (1165-1214). Sir John de Forbes was justiciar and coroner for Aberdeenshire in the time of Robert III, and leaving four sons was the common ancestor of the families of the Lords Forbes, Forbes Lord Pitsligo, and the Forbeses of Tolquhoun, Foberan, Watertoun, Culloden, Brux, &c. The eldest son, Sir Alexander de Forbes, succeeded to the estates in 1405, on his father's death, and during his time both added considerable to their extent and obtained their consolidation into a barony, with his own elevation to the peerage as a baron of parliament. In 1407 he was one of four knights who went to England to hold a friendly tournament with an equal number of English knights. Wyntoun calls him a knight of Mar, and praises the worthy manner in which he and his comrades upheld the honour of their country on the field of chivalry. In 1419 he formed one of the contingent of Scottish knights who with their followers responded to the appeal of Charles, dauphin of France, to Scotland for help agains the English. He took part in the war then going on, and was present at the battle of Beauge, 22 March 1421. During the same year he visited James I in his captivity in London, and afterwards returned to Scotland, but came again into England as far as Durham in 1423, to confey James I into his kingdom. Between 1436 and 1442 he was created by James II a lord of parliament, under the title of Baron Forbes. He died in 1448. He married about 1423 Lady Elizabeth Douglas, only daughter of George, first earl of Angus, and granddaughter of Robert II. [Dictionary of National Biography VII:376]
