John Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu
John de Montacute (c. 1330 – c. 1390) was a 14th-century English nobleman and loyal servant of King Edward III. He was the son of William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury by his wife Catherine Grandison, and younger brother of William de Montacute, 2nd Earl of Salisbury (1328–1397). He also had several younger sisters.
Montacute was summoned to parliament in 1357. Jean Froissart named "Lord John Mountacute" as one of the participants with King Edward III at the Siege of Calais in 1349.
He married Margaret de Monthermer, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Monthermer, 2nd Baron de Monthermer by his wife Margaret de Brewes.
Their children included
1. John Montacute, 3rd Earl of Salisbury (c. 1350 – 1400);
2. Eleanor Montacute, who married John Dinham (1359–1428);
3. Thomas Montagu, Dean of Salisbury Cathedral; and
4. Sybil Montagu, Prioress of Amesbury.

He was with the Prince of Wales in France in1356 and fought on September 19, 1356 at Poitiers. Early in 1378 hewas retained to serve the King as a banneret with a force consistingof another banneret, 5 knights, 53 esquires, and 60 archers and inJuly took part in the Duke of Lancaster's abortive attack on St. Malo.In 1384 he had a dispute with his brother William which the Court ofChivalry decided against him and was subsequently removed by the Kingfrom the office of Steward of the Household (Complete Peerage, VolIX:87-88).

John was 3rd Earl Salisbury, Baron de Montagu and Captain of the King's army in Ireland 1394-95. He succeeded his uncle as Earl of Salisbury in 1397. In 1398 he became Deputy Earl Marshal of England. He was Joint Ambassador to France in December 1398 and Joint Ambassador to treat with Scotland March 22, 1399. John sided with Richard II against Henry Bollinbroke, the future Henry IV. After Henry's success in the usurption of the Crown of England John was beheaded on 7 Jan 1400.

JOHN DE MONTACU, younger son of William (DE MONTAGU) 1st EARL OF SALISBURY, by Katherine DE GRANDISON, was born in London, and baptixed in St. Paul's. Having married Margaret, daughter and heir of Thomas DE MONTHERMER [LORD MONTHERMER], he had seisin of her lands on 20 December 1343. On his father's death he succeeded to the reversion of the manor and castle of Wark-upon-Tweed, and had livery under writ of 17 June 1344. He fought in the campaign in France, 1346-47, in the retinue of his brother the Earl of Salisbury, and then in that of the Prince of Wales, from the time of the landing at La Hogue, 12 July 1346 at the battle of Crécy, 26 August, and at the siege of Calais, which fell 4 August 1347. On 28 August 1354, as Dominus de Werk, he, with other magnates, joined the Prince of Wales in appointing proxies to treat with France; and before October of that year was a knight of the Prince's household. He was with the Prince of Wales in France in 1356, and fought on 19 September at Poitiers. He was summoned to Parliament from 15 December 1357 to 6 December 1389, by writs directed Johanni de Monte Acufo, whereby he is held to have become LORD MONTAGU. In the autumn of 1359 he went with the Prince again to France, and on his return, from 1361, was appointed on numerous commissions of peace, oyer and termwer, array, &c., in Hants and Devon. He made a grant in October 1365 to the sacristan of Exeter Cathedral, and in this and the following year received grants from his uncle, John de Grandison, Bishop of Exeter. In September 1372, as John de Montagu the father, he was going abroad on the King's service with his brother the Earl of Salisbury for the relief of Rochelle, but the expedition was abandoned. In July 1373 and in later years he was a commissioner to gmacrd Southampton and the coast. He was nominated on an embassy to treat with France, 20 February 1376/7, and in July did homage at the Coronation of Richard II in Westminster Abbey; and from then on till his death he was a trier of petitions in Parliament. Early in 1378 he was retained to serve the King as a banneret, with a force consisting of another banneret, 5 knights, 53 esquires, and 60 archers, and in July took part in the Duke of Lancaster's abortive attack on St. Malo. When the peasants revolted in Essex in June 1381, he was charged with making proclamations against such risings in Hants and Wilts, and to deal with any insurgents escaping from Kent. As Steward he was one of the three members of the King's household deputed in December to receive Anne of Bohemia on her arrival in England for her marriage with Richard II. In June 1382 he was appointed to survey the castle of Marlborough, and in September 1384 sat with two judges at the Tower in connection with disturbances in the city. At the end of that year he had a dispute with his brother William, Earl of Salisbury, which the Court of Chivalry decided against him, whereupon he appealed, but unsuccessfully, to the King. He was removed by the King from the office of Steward of the Household in January 1386/7. He married, before the end of 1343, Margaret, according to modern doctrine, suojure BARONESS MONTHERMER, daughter and heir of Thomas DE MONTHERMER [LORD MONTHERMER]. He died 25 February or 4 March 1389/90,) and was buried in Salisbury Cathedral. On 12 June 1390 his widow, having done homage, had restored to her various manors which she held in her own right, and she received dower under writs of 9 April 1392.
