=== Life Sketch ===
This record for Alice Driby, wife of who Field (1999) calls "Anketil III" (see excerpts below). She was according to Field "Alice Basset, Lady of Castle Bytham, daughter of Sir John Dryby and Anne Gaveston, widow of Ralph Lord Basset of Sapcote and previously of Sir Robert Tocket."

... The next three heads of this branch of the family were all called anketil Malory. Their careers overlap, but fortunately they can be distinguished by rank. It is natural to assume they were father, son, and grandson, but their is no known record of their relationship to each other or to Sir Ralph. Sir Anketil I held Kirkby Mallory in 1345 and 1361.[FN18] These are almost the only records of him, but his successor Anketil II made much more of a mark, partly by extensive land dealing and connections with the court, but first by marrying a la Zouch of Harringworth whose brother became Archbishop of York.[FN19] In 1345, the archbishop granted Anketil the manor of Sudborough in Northamptonshire, and by 1349 he was the archbishop's chief executor.[FN20] He granted Sudborough to his daughter Ala and her husband Thomas Greene of Isham in 1360, and sold Kirkby Mallory to the Abbot of Leicester in 1361, the appurtenances of the manor including the homage and service of Sir John Malory of Welton for Welton.[FN21] Sir Anketil was pensioned as an esquire of the Black Prince in 1368, and was king's knight to Richard II in 1378.[FN22] Since Ala's husband was the elder brother, and her sister Katherine's husband Ralph the son and heir of King Richard's favourite sir Henry Greene,[FN23] Sir Anketil II must have been near to the centre of things at court. He is on many lincolnshire (especially Kesteven) commissions from 1380, was sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1382 and 1388, and in 1389 exchanged his pension for the Keepership of Somerton Castle, the manor of Somerton and other lands in Lincolnshire; he also became a feoffee for William Malory of Tachbrook and Walton.[FN24] He was dead by December 1390.[FN25]
Sir Anketil III also began his career with an ambitious (and in his case
[BEGIN PAGE 178]
illicit) marriage, to Alice Basset, Lady of Castle Bytham, daughter of Sir John Dryby and Anne Gaveston, widow of Ralph Lord Basset of Sapcote and previously of Sir Robert Tocket.[FN26] When he was pardoned for this, his mainpernors included Sir Henry Greene.[FN27] He often called 'Anthony' Malory. He too was extensively employed in Lincolnshire from 1380, where he was a J.P. and succeeded Sir Anketil II as Keeper of Somerton Castle; but he also picked up the manor of Shelton in Bedfordshire in 1387.[FN28] He was knighted, but perhaps very shortly before he died: all references to him as a knight seem to be posthumous.[FN29] When he died in March 1393, his heir was his son Thomas, aged twelve; but when Alice died in October 1412 Thomas was dead: her heir was Thomas's daughter Elizabeth aged eleven.[FN30]

III. Alice de Driby, born perhaps about 1330, died 12 Oct. 1412; married first, Sir Half Basset, lord Basset of Sapcote, who died 17 July 1378; married second, not long thereafter, Sir Robert Tochet, who died very soon; and married third, Sir Anketil. Malory of Kirkby, co. Leics., who died 26 Mar. 1393.
The will of "Alicia Basset de Bytham," written in Latin, dated in April 1412, probated 26 Oct. 1412 [see
PIERS DE GAVASTON 103
Gibbons ed., Early Lincolnshire Wills, 1280-1547, pp. 57, 110, 111], left her soul to God Omnipotent and her body to be buried at Stantford next to her last husband, Anketinus Maloree, knight. She piously left money for prayers for the souls of ner husbands, Ralf Basset, Robert Tochet, and Anketil Maloree, of her parents John Dryby and Anne his wife, and for the souls of all her ancestors, benefactors and friends deceased. She gave legacies to her daughters, Elizabeth wife of lord Gray, Margerie wife of Robert Moton, and Beatrice wife of John Bagot her sOn William Maloree and Elizabeth the daughter of Thomas Maloree [her granddaughter]. From Lincoln Episcopal Register 15, folio 66d, a photostat of the will has been obtained. The original is not in existence and apparently this official copy was made long after Alice s death. In this copy, the name of Alice s mother looks most like Anne but can be read as Arnie. For the matter of that, it may have been mis-copied into the record volume, as the names in script look much alike.
The inquisition post mortem of Alice, lady Basset, widow of Anketil Malory, is thus cited in Sir Thomas Phillipps' Inquisitions Post Mortem; its date is 14. Henry IV (1413), no. 15: "Alicia Basset, widow of Rad. Basset of Sapcote, chr., vidua Malory her heir is Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Malory, chevr., son of the aforesaid Alicia, and she (Elizabeth) is aged twenty two years; lands in Leics., Staffs., Derbys., Northants., and Lincs." However, Watson's article [supra] states that Elizabeth was aged 11 in 1412, which must be correct on chronological considerations.
Child by first husband:
1. Elizabeth Basset, born at Castle Bytham, Lincs., baptized there 18 July 1372 [Watson's article, supra]; aged 7 years at father s death [1378: Dugdale S Baronage] and his heiress; married Richard, Lord Grey de Codnor.
Children by third husband, order of birth uncertain
2. Thomas Malory, born 1380-1; aged 12 years and more at Anketil's death; died before his mother. His daughter, Elizabeth, aged 11 years in 1412, was his mother's heiress and received the Driby holding, Bredon Leics.
3. William Malory, born before 1386; aged 30 years and more in 1416 [.Inq. P. M., 4 Henry V, No.24), when he was styled son of Anketil Malory, chr., dec'd [Archaeologia, vol. 56, p. 169]. See forward.
4. Margery Malory, married Robert Moton, knight, of Peckleton, near Kirkby Malory, Leics., who died ca. 1445.
5. Beatrix Malory, married John Bagot, knight.
TAG Vol. 40, pgs. 97-98
VIII. Alice de Dryby, born not far from 1340; died testate in 1412, her will naming her parents and three "former husbands," of whom it is now believed that Robert Touchet, who died early, was the first. The second spouse was Ralf, lord Bassett of Sapcote, who died in July 1378. She evidently took her third spouse, Sir Anketil Malory, shortly after, probably by the following March, when an inspeximus was calendered in the patent rolls, confirming an earlier grant to him of forty marks yearly. This acknowledgment may well have been a "nod" to him following his marriage to the king's kinswoman, Alice.
It now further appears that as early as 1408 Alice may have taken a fourth and final spouse, Sir William Papworth. The Calendar of Patent Rolls of 2 July 1408 shows a licence to William Papworth, chr., to enfeoff his manor of Papworth Annoys to certain feoffees, they to regrant the same back to him and Alice his wife, and the heirs of his body, with remainder to William, son of Anketin Malore, chr., and the heirs of his body. Although Alice, lady Basset, in her will, April 1412, did not name Papworth, she did therein refer to her "former husbands." This might imply that she then had a living spouse, whom she may not have regarded very highly. In this connection, the Calendar of Close Rolls states:
Dec. 1, 1413: To the escheator in Leics. : order to remove the King s hand, etc., from manor of Breedon, delivering the same to Roger Floure as it is found by inq. that Alice who was wife of Ralf Basset, kt., was sometime seized in fee tail of said manor, etc., and gave the same to Roger Floure and the others and they by writing indented gave it to her for life and she died seized... by charter dated at Breedon 20 May 2 Hen. IV, by name of Alice Basset, lady of Bitham, she gave the same to them... and she was seized and after her death the premises ought to revert to said Roger and the others and their heirs. (Note: this was a legal maneuver employed by Alice to avoid having her minor heir, her granddaughter Elizabeth, placed in wardship to the Crown, a costly and sometimes ruinous guardianship.)
Dec. 1, 1416: To the escheator in Cambr: order to take the fealty of William, son of Anketin Mallorre,
98 THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST
Kt., and to give him seizin of Papworth Anneys...as the King has learned.., that Alice who was wife of William Papworth, Kt., at her death held no lands in chief but that Win. Papworth was seized of said manor and with the King s licence gave the same to Henry Malpas, clk, Roger Flora, and others, and they gave the same to Win. ?apworth and Alice and the heirs of William's body with remainder to the said William, son of Anketin, and that William Papworth died without issue.
After considering the foregoing records, it now seems likely that by 1408 Alice de Dryby fourthly and finally married William Papworth, predeceasing him in 1412, following whose death in 1415 his manor of Papworth Annoys passed to her son, William Malory.
