Biography
Ralph, like his uncle, served under Henry III in Gascony in 1253, having been knighted after 1247... His heir at the time of his death shortly before 1291 was his son by his marriage to Isabel, Sir Philippe d'Aubigny. However, Philippe survived his father by only a few years, dying around 1294, the entirety of his estate passing to his younger brother Sir Helié d'Aubigny. It would appear that links with Brittany were retained throughout this period, Sir Helié having to be naturalised in 1295 as a result of his foreign birth, perhaps in the manor house at Landal."
SIR HELlÉ, or ELlS, DAUBENEY, of South Ingleby, South Petherton, &c., Seigneur de Landal, next brother and heir, aged 26 and more, or 30 and more at his brother's death. He did homage and had livery of his brother's lands, 26 August 1294. He was in the Army of Wales, in the retinue of William de Valence in 1294, and was sent to Scotland on special affairs by the Earl of Surrey in June 1297. Having been born beyond seas he was naturalized in 1295. He was summoned for Military Service from 16 December 1295 to 7 November 1302, to attend the King at Salisbury, 26 Jan. 1296/7 and to Parliament from 24 June 1295 to 22 January 1304/5, by writs directed Elye de Alblniaco or Daubeny, whereby he is held to have become LORD DAUBENEY.
He married Joan. He died shortly before 8 April 1305. His widow had livery of her dower and of the manor of South Ingleby, 12 May 1305, and licence to marry whom she would, 28 April 1306. She married Roland DE COMBAR, a Breton, before 9 April 1307, at which date the said lands had been taken into the King's hand, because Roland had fled from justice when indicted of divers felonies."
Elias Daubeney was summoned to parliament as a Baron from 2 Novermber, 1295, to 22 January, 1305. His lordship was s. at his decease in 1305 by his son, by Hawise, his wife, Sir Ralph Daubeney, 2nd Baron."
"He made two significant contributions to the family's interests. First, he determined that their attentions would focus on England rather than his own birthplace of Brittany, their primary sphere of influence hitherto; and in 1295 Edward I granted a charter naturalizing Elis and his heirs in perpetuity. Second, Sir Elis was the first member of the family to rise to a position of national prominence. After serving in Edward I's campaign against the Welsh rebel Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294?5, he received personal summonses to parliament until his death in 1305. He also took an active part in King Edward's campaigns against the Scots."
On his death, the crown took possession of most of his lands during Ralph's minority, his Lincolnshire properties being assigned to Joan as her dower.
