- Title: Medieval English Genealogy: The Marriage of Maud Holand & Thomas Swinnerton, p 4-6
Publication: Name: http://www.nltaylor.net/pdfs/a_Gresley.pdf;
Note: The primary evidence for the marriage of Maud de Holland & Thomas de Swynnerton is the Visitation of Cheshire in 1580 that says Thomas de Swynnerton married Maud, dau of Robert de Holland.
Other evidences include:
--Maud de Holland was unmarried on 3 Nov 1332, when her exfiancé, John de Mowbray, already then married to Joan of Lancaster, granted her a life interest in two manors. In the abstract she is referred to in the style of an unmarried woman, "Matilda daughter of Robert de Holand". [MY NOTE: This shows that Robert de Holland had a dau named Maud.]
--A 14th century effigy in the Swinnerton church of “Matildis de Swynnerton” with Holand arms suggests that Maud Holand married a Swinnerton, although it doesn't say which Swynnerton.
-- 2 deeds, of 1356-57 (30 Edw III) and 1364 (38 Edw III) which involve regrants by John le Beck, rector of Checkley, of Swinnerton lands to Sir Robert de Swinnerton (son of Sir Thomas) & Elizabeth (Beck), which include 1/3 dower interest in lands held as dower by Dame Matilda de Swinnerton. [MY NOTE: Thomas & Maud had a son Robert Swynnerton that married Elizabeth de Beke.]
--A deed of 1356-57 for the presentation of a clerk to the church of Swinnerton by Dame Matilda de Swynnerton, “who claimed the right of patronage for that turn by reason of holding the third part of the manor of Swynnerton in dower, inasmuch as Sir Thomas de Swynnerton, who holds two parts of the manor, had already presented for two turns.”
This article concludes that the identity of Maud Holland as wife of Thomas de Swynnerton is not supported by explicit evidence earlier than the 1580 Visitation, and the 14th century charters naming Maud de Swynnerton do not explicitly identify her as wife of Sir Thomas de Swinnerton, although it seems likely.
[MY NOTE: The Visitations are generally accepted as "proof", even though they are not 100% primary documents, unless their is a reason to suspect they are incorrect. For instance, if something is known to be wrong, or if something appears to be penciled in after the fact, it may raise suspicion but otherwise generally accepted.]
