Excerpt from the "History of the Frasers of Lovat" pages 44-46
"According to the MS already quoted Hugh continued to following the footsteps of his distinguished predecessors, adhering firmly to both King David and his nephew and successor, King Robert. But the character he has of him, he says is that 'he is very unfit for a courtier'.
He was man of great vivacity and sprightliness full of courage and resolution. He disdained mean complaisance, and even in the Kings presence he could maintain what he spoke and speak what he thought right. He had such an absolute command of the passions and an evenness of temper that he was compared to the Caspian Sea that never ebbs or flows."
He married Isabel Wemyss and had 7 children:
Alexander, heir and successor
Hugh, successor to his brother
John, of Knock, county of Ayre, married Knockmiller
Duncan, married Elizabeth Dallas of Morayshire
Margaret, married in 1395, John Hamilton of Bushernock, Laird of Stirlingshire.
Agnes, married Lachlan Mackintosh VIII, Captain of Clan Chattan
Cecilia, married Alexander Innes

=== HUGH FRASER, lord of Lovat and Kinnell, ===
HUGH FRASER, lord of Lovat and Kinnell, did homage to the Bishop of Moray, 12 September 1367, as portioner of the lands of Ard, for the tithes of which he made an arrangement in 1384. He was living 30 March 1407 when he granted a charter at Kinnell, but dead before 30 Mar. 1410. [Complete Peerage VIII:184]__________________________________Hugh Fraser of Lovat and Kinnell, whose parentage is open to conjecture, though it is certain that he was a cadet of the powerful family of Frasers in the Lothians, as his seal bears three cinquefoils within a bordure charged with nine mullets. He may have been descended from Sir Simon Fraser, second son of Sir Andrew Fraser of Touch-Fraser, who was killed at the battle of Halidon Hill, a view which is accepted by Douglas, Macfarlane, and others, including Lord Saltoun, who makes Alexander, son of Sir Simon, the father of this Hugh, but there does not seem to be any charter exidence to bear out the relationship, except that in the year 1464 Lord Lovat made a reciprocal entail with Alexander Fraser of Philorth, in which each describes the other as his beloved cousin. On 12 September 1367, Hugo Fraser, 'Dominus de Loveth et portionarius de le Ard,' did homage at Elgin to Alexander, Bishop of Moray, for his part of the half davoch lond of Kyntallery (Kiltarlity) and of the lands of Esse, and for certain fishings in the water of Forn. William de Fentoun, Lord ofBeauly, and Alexander Chisholm, seem to have been co-portioners of Ard, and both did homage to the Bishop of Moray about the same time for their lands of Esse and Kiltarlity. Hugh Fraser appears to have been in possession of Patrick Graham's portion of the Ard, but by what right has not been ascertained. On 6 March 1377, Hugo Fraser, Dominus de Lowet, resigend his lands of Fayrlehope, in the barony of Linton and county of Peebles, into the hands of James Dougals, Lord of Dalkeith. By an agreement entered into on 30 November 1384 between Hugh, Dominus de Lovet, and Alexander, Bishop of Moray, the former, on payment of £20 sterling at the feasts of Pentecost and Martinmas, in equal portions, and a further payment of fifty shillings at Martinmas aforesaid, was to be relieved of all bygone arrears of the annuals of Kiltarlity, Esse, and Moniach, and of the tenid sheves of Wardlaw owed by him. On 30 March 1407 he gave to his cousin, Peter de Stryveline, a charter of his lands of Easter Breky, in the barony of Kinnell. This charter was confirmed, 30 March 1410 by the Duke of Albany, in which confirmation Hugh Fraser is referred to as 'Quondam Hugh Fraser de Lovett et de Kynell.' [The Scots Peerage V:519-520]

=== HUGH FRASER, brother and heir, described ===
HUGH FRASER, brother and heir, described in his marriage contract, March 1415/6, as lord of Lovat. In 1422 he made an agreement to marry his son to a daughter (thereafter to be born) of Thomas, Earl of Moray [SCT]. He, with a following of 16 persons, was one of a number of notables who had licence, February 1423/4, to meet James I [SCT] at Durham on his return from captivity in England.(a) From 1427 to 1429 he was sheriff or sheriff depute of Inverness. In 143o he had confirmation of the lands of Golfurd in Nairn, and of the barony of Kinnell, upon his own resignation. In January 1436/7, as lord of Lovat and one-third of Glenelg, he granted the said third to Alexander, Earl of Ross [SCT]. He married, 1stly, Janet, sister of William DE FENTON. She died before December 1429. He married, 2ndly, before December 1429, Isabel, daughter of Sir John WEMYSS of Wemyss. He died before July 1440, [Complete Peerage VIII:185]

Hugh Fraser of Lovat. That he was a son of Hugh Fraser, first of Lovat, is proved by a deed of the year 1549. He was also, on 20 September 1430, served heir to his brother Alexander in the lands of Ard, the inquest being held at Inverness on 2 May. He is there described as Alexander's 'legitimus et propinquior heres' and as being 'legitime ætatis.' On 9 August 1422 he entered into a contract with Thomas of Dunbar, 'Earl of Murraffe,' to marry his son and heir to a daughter of the Earl's by Isobell Innes, or, failing that, that his heir should marry into Lord Moray's family, in consideration for which the Earl gave to Hugh the barony of Abertarff, of which he probably held the 'dominium utile' already. In 1429 Hugh Fraser was Sheriff-depute of Inverness,' and again in 1431. On 8 January 1436 he granted to Alexander de Ile, Earl of Ross, one-third part of Glenelg. He died before 20 July 1440, on which date his son Thomas is described as Lord of Lovat, in witnessing a charter at Inverness.
He married, first, about the year 1415, Janet Fentoun, a sister of William Fentoun of that Ilk. Their marriage contract is dated at Baky 3 March 1415-16, and is in the form of an indenture. Janet Fentoun, died before 1429, by which date Hugh had married Isabella, daughter of Sir John Wemyss of that Ilk. On 10th December he grants an acquittance to his 'derreste and beste beluffit bruthir in lauch, Davy of the Wemys, Lord of that Ilke,' of 35 merks by way of marriage. [The Scots Peerage V:521-522]
