=== Life Sketch ===
The children shown for the marriage of Nicholas de Stapleton (L75S-7A1) and Isabella de Richmond (G9TF-GTT) are the same as for the marriage of Nicholas de Stapleton (M9S8-VSJ) and Isabella Bassett (L81Y-CNY).
Sir Nicholas de Stapelton, 2nd baron, lord of Carleton, Stapelton (Kirkby Fletham, etc., jure uxoris), co-heir to his grandmother Larderina; Nicholas de Stapelton and Aucher FitzHenry were joint lords of Carlton 1284/5 [1]; in 32 Ed. I. (1303/4) [2] he and his father obtained a grant of free warren in Oustwyc; Nicholas de Stapelton and Aucher FitzHenry [Nicholas’ uncle] were certified joint lords of Thorp Arch in 1316; and in Kirkby’s Inquest he was lord of Muscote and joint lord of South Duffield with the Bishop of Durham, of Wymbelton with the Prior of Newburgh, of Tyverington with William de Latymer, of Stapelton with the Abbot of St. Agatha, of Kirkby Fletham, Carlton, East and West Hathelsay with Henry le Scrope, of Oustwyc [Austwick, Yorkshire] with John de Harington (Hammerton), of Southbrun [Southburn near Driffield?] with John de Twenge, which last he had on the partition of Oustwyc; had a partition (and received Kentmere as his portion) with his aunt Joan (his mother’s sister), wife of Aucher FitzHenry, 5 Ed. II. [1312], held rents in Stapelton on Tees derived from his father.; aged 24 in 1314 [when his father died]; Nicholas de Stapelton and Aucher FitzHenry were certified joint lords of Thorp Arch in 1316; was in the wars of Scotland, and in 1322 was in the insurrection of the Earl of Lancaster, for which he was fined 2000 marks, and was taken prisoner [in 1322] at Boroughbridge. [2] (Palgrave; Parl. Writs.) Summoned to Parliament 1343, and died the same year, 17 Ed. III. [1344].
He married three times. Foster calls Joan Darrel his ‘2nd wife’, but does not specify which order Isabel Richmond or Catherine Boys married him. But the Stapleton papers at the History Centre in Hull, England say Isabel was his first wife.
[1] This probably refers to his grandfather Nicholas de Stapelton.
[2] Regarding this date, he must have been more than 24 years old in 1314 if he and his father received a grant in 1303, so born about 1285?
[3] In 1322, the Battle of Boroughbridge took place as King Edward II overpowered Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, bringing about the end of Edward II's retaliation against those who had opposed him in the Despenser War of 1320–21.
Foster's pedigree of Stapleton of Carlton and Stapylton of Wighill, etc. rearranged according to date with footnotes added by NDW.
