BARONY OF FERRERS OF CHARTLEY (CP doesn't give numbers/recognize the title?)
SIR JOHN DE FERRERS, of Chartley, &c., son and heir, by 1st wife, born and baptised at Southoe on or about 10 August 1331. On 13 December 1353 the King took his homage, and he had livery of the lands of his grandmother, Hawise, sometime the wife of John de Ferrers. He was with the King in the invasion of France, October 1359 to 1360, and in the invasion of Navarre in 1367. He petitioned the Duke of Lancaster to restore to him the lands forfeited by Robert, Earl of Derby, and those which Margaret, formerly Countess of Derby, had held in dower as of the castle and honour of Tutbury, co. Stafford, and as of the earldom of Derby; and the manor of Higham, Northants, which she had held in jointure, and the manor of Kingston [Kingston Lacy], Dorset, which she had inherited from Roger de Quency, formerly Earl of Winchester, her father.
He married (royal licence, 1 October 1349) Elizabeth, daughter of Ralph (De STAFFORD), EARL OF STAFFORD, by his 2nd wife, Margaret, daughter and heir of Hugh (DAUDELEYE), EARL of GLOUCEST-ER. She had married 1stly (contract dated 12 March 1346/7]I, she then under 13, Fulk LESTRAUNGE (son and heir of Sir John LESTRAUNGE, of Whitchurch, Salop, [LORD LESTRAUNGE]], who was born 2 February 1330/1, and died s.p., 6 September (or 22 or 30 August) 1349, during the pestilence, aged 18. Sir John de Ferrers died beyond seas, 2 or 3 April, being, probably, slain at the battle of Najera, 3 April 1367. The manors, which he and his wife had held jointly at his death, and those held in her right of which she had been jointly enfeoffed with her 1st husband, were liberated to her, 24 June and 20 August 1367. She married, 3rdly, as 1st wife, Sir Reynold DE COBEHAM, of Sterborough, Surrey [Lord COBEHAM]. She died 7 August 1375. He, who was born at Sterborough, 8 June 1348, and baptised at Edenbridge, died 3 or 6 July 1403, aged 55, and was buried in Lingfield Church: brass. - Title: Appendix I of "Ancestors and Descendants of John Price: Immigrant to Virginia: 1610-11"
Note: Although the book is compiled by Vina Chandler Price, Appendix I was included at the request of Mrs. Margaret Scruggs Carruth, and was researched by Miss Kett and by Mr. H. E. Forrest (after the death of Miss Kett, which took before 1930). Both Miss Kett and Mr. Forrest were reputed to be professional genealogists. Mr Forrest is also referred to as the "Antiquarian Editor" of the Shrewsbury Chronicle
I looked H. E. Forrest online and found that he is also the editor of the following books:
--"Shrewsbury Burgess Roll", published in 1924 by the Shrewsbury and Shropshire Archaeological and Parish Register Society
--"The old Churches of Shrewsbury: Their History, Architecture and Associations", published in 1920 by Shrewsbury, Wilding & Son
--"Some Old Shropshire Houses and their Owners: Braggington (with a plate), Dinthill, Whitley, & Play-Y-Court", published in 1915 by Shropshire Archaeological & Natural History Society.
Margaret Scruggs Carruth is a charter member of "Daughters of the Barons of Runnemede". She served as Registrar when it was first organized, and is listed as member #22. To be eligible for membership, a person must descend from one or more of the Barons of Runnemede. The Barons forced King John to agree to the Magna Carta, a charter constituting a fundamental guarantee of rights and privileges. Mrs. Scruggs claims eligibility for membership through John Price who supposedly descended from eleven of the Barons.
Appendix I provides two different lineages. One is from Robert Fitzwalter (who was one of the Barons of Runnemede) to John Price (born 1584-5), and the titular character of this book. The 2nd is from Elystan Glodrydd app Cyhelin ap Ifor (933-1010) (who was Prince of Ferlllys and founder of the Fourth Royal Tribe of Wales) back to the same John Price.
Page: On pg. 517 (13th Gen), John de Ferrers is identified as the son of Robert (died 1279) and Agnes (daughter of Humphrey de Bohun of Kimolton, died 1297, and Maude); the husband of Elizabeth (daughter of Ralph (1st Earl of Stafford K.G.) and Margaret d'Audley); and the father of Robert de Ferrers.
