Notes for John Livingston:
From The Livingstons of Callendar, etc by Edwin Brockholst Livingston 1920:
Sir John was, on Jan. 17, 1398-99, a member of the Duke of Rothesay's Council, the grandson of Robert II. In Feb. 1389-90 Sir John Livingston of Callendar had been appointed an arbitrator in a dispute between the Abbot of Cambuskenneth and William Fenton, and his name appears, also sometimes coupled with that of his eldest son and heir Alexander, as witness to various charters of that abbey, and charters of the Fleming family and others, circa 1899-140l. In July 1402 Sir John was an auditor of the accounts of the above Duke of Albany when Chamberlain of Scotland; and two months later he fell in battle at Homildon Hill in Northumberland, where the Scots under the Earl of Douglas were defeated by the English under Sir Henry Percy, the famous "hotspur,' and the Earl of March, Sept. 14, 1402.
The battle was famously recounted in Shakespeare’s Henry IV. Although Humbleton Hill is the modern name of the site, over the centuries it has been variously named Homildon, Hameldun, Holmedon, and Homilheugh.
Married: to (first name unknown) Menteith, daughter of John Menteith of Kerse.
Sir John Livingston and ? Menteith had the following children:
1.Sir Alexander Livingston of Callendar
2.Robert Livingston, Burgess of Stirling, reputed to have been the ancestor of the Livingstons of Westquarter.
3.John Livingston, reputed to have been the progenitor of the Livingstons of Banton or Ballintoun in Stirlingshire.
4.James Livingston who got into trouble with the officers of the Exchequer in 1417, in an attempt to evade the Linlithgow customs over the export of some wool.
Sir John Livingston married second on August 5, 1381 to Agnes Douglas, daughter of Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith and had the following children:
1.Archibald Livingston, who was a "natural idiot", and after his father's death was placed under the charge of his uncles William and Walter Livingston and Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith. (for another case of insanity, see James Livingston, 2nd Lord Livingston of Callendar)
2.William Livingston who became 1st Viscount of Kilsyth; his great X3 grand daughter Barbara Livingston married {Reverend} Alexander Livingston circa 1570.
3.Henry Livingston who was Knight Commander of the order of St. John of Jerusalem in Scotland and Preceptor of Torphichen.
4.Sir John is named as one of the executors in the 2 Wills of Sir James Douglas dated 9/30/1390 and 12/19/1392. In the first Will a bequest of a ring with a St. Christopher was to Sir John Livingston, but not mentioned in the second.
In my extensive family history research for the Boggs line, I found that the Ancient official name of Boggs, Livingston, Livingstone was the Clan McLea. They fought in the Battle Culloden, fighting as Stewarts of Appin. One of our Livingstone ancestors wrapped the Clan McLea flag inside his cloths and returned to Lismore Island with the only Clan flag out of 15 that wasn't burned by the British. It hangs in Edinburge Castle today. There are Livingstone's still living today in Lismore Isle and Appin, Scotland. One of which is the present “Keeper of the Bachuil”.
The first in MY Boggs line to come to America from Scotland in 1600 was James Boggs the first. If you are reading this you are most likely a member of this same Boggs line. When you make changes to this line, you alter mine, possible your own & other Boggs family lines. Be careful and be positive of your sources & proof. Just because it is on Ancestry. Com doesn't make it right. Also there are many different Boggs books written by other family members. The names of my Boggs family line has been carefully researched. Thankfully, Irene Slack dedicated her life researching her husbands Boggs line back to the late 1700's. Irene sent me 100's of family group sheets, Wills, personal Boggs family letters, newspaper articles, Boggs newspapers, ect. I have also spent over 40 years doing research on MY Boggs line and have enter 1000's of names and ordinances.
His ancestor's went by Livingstone until the Battle Culloden. The name Livingstone was the UK name of all Boggs. When England went to war with Scotland, the Livingston's fled to the Bogglands (swamps) of Scotland and took refuge. This is where the Livingston name changed to Boggs. The same happened when England was at war with Ireland. After 1575 UK records may be found under the name Livingston not Boggs. A lot of the records I was able to obtain started with the older IGI, Paf Family History program in October 2003. When the LDS Church changed their network program, all of the records prior to the 1400's were not carried over. We are now being told the work does not have to be done for anyone born before 1500 unless we contact Family Search. This is probably to save space. I am trying to include all Livingston names that I obtained. I believe, like myself, others would like to have the family history I possess on the Boggs, Livingston family names, as it goes back to the 900's
I now spend a lot of time repairing entries. I always appreciate learning new information, but please be
careful adding, deleting & editing family names from a particular Boggs family file. Almost every Boggs & Livingston family has a Henry, Charles, Thomas, John, Alexander, William, Margaret, Elizabeth, Mary, etc, uses these names as first and/or middle names. Check the dates carefully. Make sure the parents aren't too old or young to have children. Also, deceased before the child's birth or 2+ generations between ancestors.
