William Ruthven was a son of William of Ruthven. He is noticed as "of Ballernach" (possibly Balerno) before the death of his father.[1]
He granted a charter to Walter of Haliburton of Dirleton, which was confirmed by Robert, Duke of Albany, Regent, 2 February 1407/8.[2]
He was in England as a hostage for the ransom of James I. 1424-1427.[3]
He died in 1428.[4]

His wife is not noticed in source. They had a son:[5] Cowan suggests he had one son and two daughters.[6]
