  Biography of Alexander Sutherland 1st Laird of Dunbeath
  Alexander was born around 1395 almost certainly at Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland, the main seat of his father Robert Sutherland, 6th Earl of Sutherland .
  
  Alexander was married first to Mariotta MacDonald, daughter of Donald MacDonald, Lord of the Isles. They only had a daughter Margaret. Evidence in the form of family wills and titles indicate that he and his mistress, later his 2nd wife Katherine Chalmers had a large family including sons Alexander, Edward, Robert, Nicholas and John and daughters Marjory and Marion.
  
  Alexander died shortly after dictating his last will on 15th November 1456. He was staying with his daughter Marjory Sutherland and her husband William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness at their home Roslin Castle, Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland.
  
  In his will which follows in full, he makes provision for all 7 of his living children and also includes references to his nephew Sir Alexander Stratton of Lauriston, son of his sister Christian.
