=== Life Sketch ===
Biography
This family has been mistakenly identified as being associated with Castle Cary, Somerset. Rather they were associated with a Castle Cary in Devon.
The Visitation of Devon states that John was a son of William Cary and Margaret Bozume. It also indicates that he married twice.
His first wife was Agnes, daughter of Lord Stafford. They had no surviving children.
His second wife was Jane, daughter of Sir Guy Brian.
Four children of John and Jane are named:
1.) Thomas
2.) William
3.) John
4.) Johanna
This Sir John Carye was a Knight of great worth and is said to have had lands in 3 counties: Devon, Dorset & Somerset. He apparently dwelled at times in every of them; at Hoke in Dorset, and at Castle Carye in Devon. He was a great benefactor to the Abbey of Abbottesbery in Dorset, which he endowed with the great Poole, called Abbottesbery Poole as well as sundry other lands and revenues. After his death he was buried in the same Abbey.
Research Notes
There is some dispute surrounding the marriages noted in the Visitation.
