=== Life Sketch ===
Henry de Erdington (or Erdinton, Herdington), Knt, of Erdington, in Aston, Warwickshire, Little Withyford, Shawbury, and Wellington, Shropshire, was son of Giles de Erdington of Besford, Shawbury, Wellington and withyfordm Shropshire
Henry’s parentage is confused in the early records and references. Giles de Erdington is named as his father in a vignette of Giles’ legal career,[4] citing as a reference, Dugdale’s Baronage, Volume II, p. 112, and so named in Royal Ancestry.[1] However, an Inquisition dated 26 February 1276[5] states that Henry was the nephew of Giles de Erdington. This latter interpretation is supported by an Erdington family tree in a 1795 article in the Gentleman’s Magazine,[6] which shows Henry as the son of Giles’ sister, Mary, the wife of William FitzAlan. Other references state that William died shortly after his marriage to Mary, and that they had no heirs. Another candidate who would satisfy the Inquisition is Giles' elder brother, Peter, who died while on Crusade when Giles was still not of legal age. Thus, the true parentage of Henry will remain uncertain until further pertinent records are identified. It is interesting, however, that in either case the father of both Giles and Mary, Thomas de Erdington, is the grandfather of Henry. Whether he is the paternal or maternal grandfather is the question
His widow Matilda married William de Byfield, for which they had to pay a fine of £500 for marrying without the king's licence on 26 April, 1286 (Cal. Fine Rolls 1, p. 226). William died in 1302, having survived his wife Matilda (Cal. inq. p.m. 106/2, vol. iv, p. 67).[3]
