Biography
In 35 Edward I (1307), Thomas del Feyld served as a juror in an "unjust inquisition". "The former jury of twelve are to pay to the plaintiff's damages, assessed at 6s. 8d.; and as it is attainted by the 24 that they made a false oath, they, namely, ...Thomas del Feyld (2s.)...are to be imprisoned; they are redeemed from prison by pledges of redemption; one being surety for another. They are fined the amounts put over their names, altogether 60s."[1]
On 20 Nov 1307, Thomas del Feilde was fined for trespass.[2]
In 1 Edward II (1308), Thomas del Feild was a complainant against Robert de Saltonstall for trespass and contempt.[3]
On 6 Dec 1308, it appears that Thomas sold land to his brother, Richard, "Richard del Feild gives 3s. 4d. to take 1-1/2 bovates of land in Sourby from Thomas del Feild", then bought land from a different Richard, " Thomas del Feild gives 2s. to take 1/2 bovate of land in the same place [in eadem sitis] from Richard s. of Alote."[4]
He apparently had difficulty keeping his animals corralled, as he was fined multiple times for "escapes". On 10 Jun 1308, in the Court at Halifax for Sourby, for "escapes in Ayrikedene...Thomas del Feild, 1 horse, 2d."[5] Then on 20 May 1309, Thomas del Feild of Sourby was fined 3d. "for escapes"[6] and fined again in 1316.[7]
On 6 Dec 1315 in Court held at Wakefeld, "Thomas del Feld give 12d. to take [3 acres] in Sourby from Robert, s. of John, who pays 12d. to take another 3 acres with buildings in exchange from Thomas."[8]
On 12 Mar 1316, "Thomas del Feld sues William de Covenhale for debt."[9]
His wife is unknown. Known children are:[10][11][12]
John, b. ca 1300[13]
