=== ROGER DE SWYNNERTON, son and heir. In 13 ===
ROGER DE SWYNNERTON, son and heir. In 1305-06 he had a grant of free warren, a market, and a fair, in his demesne lands of Swinnerton. On 19 September 1310 he was of those whose duty it was to perform knight service for the Earl of Lancaster's fees. On 16 October 1313 he was pardoned for his share in the execution of Gavaston. On 6 October 1315 he was granted a licence to crenellate his dwelling-place of Swinnerton. In 1316 he was returned as lord of Swinnerton. On 2 November 1317 he was appointed custodian of the town of Stafford; on 25 February 1320/1 he was going overseas on the King's service. On 10 April 1321 he was appointed bailiff of the hundred of Tatmanslow, on 30 August 1321 Keeper of the Tower of London, and on 16 November 1321, Keeper of the castle and manor of Eccleshall. In 1324 he was returned by the Sheriff of Stafford as a knight to attend the great council. In the same year and thereafter he was engaged with his relatives in the family feuds which were then rife in Staffordshire; one incident in which was the abduction of Joan, widow of Piers de Gresley of Drakelowe, and her detention at Swinnerton. On 18 February 1326/7 he was granted for life the lands in Staffs and Cheshire of the late Earl of Winchester. In 1332 and 1334 he was granted lands to support his estate as a Banneret. In 1328/9 he was granted view of frank-pledge and other franchises in Swinnerton. In 1335 and again in 1337/8 he was summoned to serve against the Scots; and in 1333, after the battle of Halidon Hill, he was granted a general pardon. He was summoned to Parliament by writ addressed Rogero de Swynn'ton dated 20 December 1337, whereby he is held to have become LORD SWYNNERTON.
He married Maud (j). He died on or before 3 March 1337/8. Maud survived him and presented to the church of Swinnerton in March 1357/8. [Complete Peerage XII/1:585-6, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(j) In a paper published in the 'Genealogist', vol xxxi, pp. 69, the Rev. Charles Swynnerton sought to show that Maud was the daughter of Sir Thomas Haughton of Haughton, about 9 miles S. of Swinnerton. He cited a number of instances of close association between her brother Thomas and Roger de Swynnerton, which do no go much further than to encourage enquiry; but he also refers to a seal of Maud the widow, on which the arms of Swynnerton are impaled with those of Haughton. This is taken from a 17th Century copy of a book of seals, and the transaction is dated 2 Edward III. This date is clearly impossible, and Mr. Swynnerton rejects it as a copyist's error. If he is right, this evidence seems to be conclusive.

=== ( Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith ) Roger ===
( Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith ) Roger de Swynnerton was a minor in 1300, and was summoned to Parliament as a Baron 1337 and died 1338. Matilda, his relic, died 1357/8. During the troublesome times which succeeded the accession of Edward II, and for nearly the whole of that reign, the law was practically in a state of abeyance, and the County od Stafford was at that time a scene of unbridled license. The inquisitions which were held in Staffordshire between 1323/5 brought to light deeds of rapine and violence in which nearly all the leading families of the county were involved. Among these the Swynnertons were conspicuous. There seems to have been a feud between the Swynnertons and Staffords of Sandon, in which large numbers were engaged as partisans on either side. Roger and Matilda had Roger, eldest son, who died sine prole in the lifetime of his father; Robert, who succeeded his father, age 26 in 1338, and d.s.p. 1349; then Thomas succeeded Robert; Richard and Humphrey.
