  "JOHN HARINGTON [also DE HAVERINGTON], son and heir of Sir Robert DE HAVERINGTON, of Harrington in Cumberland (died 1297), by Agnes, daughter and eventually heir of Aline, wife of Richard DE CANSFIELD, heiress of the family of Furness or Fleming of Muchland in Furness, was born about 1281 [f]. He succeeded his mother in 1293, and his father in 1297, being still under age. He was ceremonially knighted, 22 May 1306, when Edward, Prince of Wales, was made a knight at Westminster, and probably accompanied the Prince on his expedition to Scotland to avenge the murder of Comyn. A short time afterwards he had a dispute with the Abbot of Furness, his immediate lord, regarding services demanded by the Earl of Lancaster from Aldingham. He was summoned for Military Service 26 October 1309 to 27 March 1335, to Councils from 30 December 1324 (prorogued on 20 February, cancelled 8 April) to 25 February 1341/2, and to Parliament from 3 December 1326 to 30 July 1347, by writs directed Johanni de Haveryngton' or Haryngton', whereby he is held to have become LORD HARINGTON. As an adherent of the Earl of Lancaster he received pardon in 1313 for complicity in the murder of Piers de Gavaston, and a further pardon as the Earl's adherent November 1318, and in that year obtained a grant of free warren in his demesnes of Austwick, Harrington and Thurnham. He was a commissioner of array in 1316, 1318, 1322 and 1324; was forbidden to attend the Earl of Lancaster's meeting of "good peers" at Doncaster, November 1321, and does not seem to have taken part in the Earl's rising in the following spring; had a protection, June 1322, while assisting Andrew de Harcla in the Scottish Marches, but was outlawed in 1323 on the discovery of Harcla's treason, being pardoned on surrender; and later in that year was a custodian of the truce with the Scots. He was appointed on various commissions in the North to decide causes, array the local forces, &c. On the death s.p. of his brother Michael, he succeeded him in possession of Beetham, and Witherslack, Westmorland, and other estates. In 1336, in conjunction with Joan his wife, he made a settlement of his Lancashire manors: and, 6 January 1340/1, he obtained a charter of free warren in Witherslack, and a park in Aldingham.   Sir John de Harington, 1st Lord Harington was born about 1281 and died 2 Jul 1347. He was buried in Cartmel Church. He was of Aldingham, Lancashire, Caucefield and Farleton. He received a pardon in 1313 for having supported the Earl of Lancaster at the time of the murder of Piers de Gavaston, and another pardon for being the Earl's adherent in Nov 1318. He obeyed the king's order to stay away from the Earl of Lancaster's meeting of "good peers" at Doncaster in 1321, and was not recorded as having participated in the Earl's uprising in the spring of 1322. He was outlawed in 1823 when the treason of Andrew de Harcla, whom he assisted in the Scottish Marches, was discovered, but was pardoned on surrender, and was a custodian of the truce with the Scots later in the year.

  John de Haverington or Harington, son and heir of Sir Robert Haverington, of Harrington in Cumberland and his wife, Agnes, and eventually heir of Aline, wife of Richard de Cansfield, heiress of the family of Furness or Fleming of Muchland in Furness. John was born about 1281 and he succeeded his mother in 1293, and his father in 1297 while he was still under age. He was knighted, 22 May 106 when Edward, Prince of Wales was made a knight at Westminster.

His named on the writs is styled "Johanni de Haverynton." and he was called Lord Harington.

John Harington (alias de Haverington) was born in 1281 in Farleton, Melling, the son of Sir Robert de Haverington (died 1297), of Harrington in Cumbria, by his wife Agnes de Cansfield (died 1297). He was a minor at his father's death in 1297 and between 1297 and 1302 he was in wardship to Sir William de Dacre. He was knighted on 22 May 1306 and was summoned to military service in October 1309 when he accompanied Edward, Prince of Wales on a trip to Scotland. According to Findagrave # 71719420, John married twice: First to Margaret de Barlingham (died 1307) having issue: Robert Harington (1305–1334) who predeceased his father. John Harington (b.1307). Margaret died during his birth. Secondly to Joan de Dacre by whom he had one child: Joan Harington (b. 1330) He died on 2 June 1347 at Aldingham and was buried in Cartmel Priory, formerly in Lancashire, now in Cumbria, where survives his monument with effigies of himself and his wife.
