Inq. taken at Fulham, Thursday after the Assumption, 6 Richard II. He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in his demesne as of fee jointly with Joan, his wife. Fulham. The manor (extent given). North Bovy (or Bovi). 8l. rents. Both held of William la Sowche for half a knight’s fee and a fourth part of a fee. These she held by gift of Edmund Pipard and Master Robert Pyle, by a fine levied in the king’s court, to her and William Pipard, knight, and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of William. Langedone and Litel Toteneys. The manor (or manors), containing 2 carucates of land and 14l. rent, held in the same form of the heirs of James de Cobham by services (sic) of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. She held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick. She and the said William died without heir male of their bodies. She died on Monday after St. Laurence last [13 August 1364]. Margaret the wife of Warin de Insula, aged 32 years and more, and Maud the wife of Osbert Hamely, aged 30 years and more, are the heirs of the said William Pipard. Long before the death of Margery the said Osbert and Maud granted the reversion of all the manors &c. of Maud’s inheritance which might pertain to them through the death of William and Margery without heir male of their bodies to Master Thomas Bray by a fine, by virtue of which grant Margery attorned. The manor, held for life jointly with William Pyppard her husband by gift of Robert Pyle, chaplain, and Robert Holdych to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of William, as is contained in a fine. The manor is held of the prince of Wales, as of the honor of Wallyngford, by homage and fealty and suit to his court of Walyngford yearly. She died on Monday after St. Laurence last [13 August 1364] without any heir male by the said William. Margaret the wife of Warin de Insula, knight, aged 32 years and more, and Maud the wife of Osbert Hamely, aged 30 years and more, daughters of the said William Pippard, are his heirs to his manor in Wengrave by virtue of the fine. The manor (extent given), held for life jointly with William Pipard her husband by gift of Geoffrey Gilbert to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to Robert Fitz Elys and Margaret his wife and the heirs of their bodies, by a fine levied in the king’s court and with the king’s licence. The said William and Margery have died without heir male of their bodies. The manor, except a messuage therein, is held of the king in chief by service of a sparrowhawk (nisi), or 2s. yearly. The messuage is held of William Coppidok by service of 8d. yearly. The extent of the manor mentions a leet held on Whit Monday. Margery died on Monday after St. Laurence last [13 August 1364]. Robert Fitz Elys has been dead fifteen years; and Margaret his wife, who survives, is now married to Warin de Insula, knight. Stephen died during Margaret’s lifetime and Robert died without issue by her. After Robert’s death Warin del Isle, knight, took Margaret to wife and had issue by her a son named Gerard. Margaret died on Wednesday, 3 August last [1375]. The said Gerard, aged 15 years and more, son of the said Warin and Margaret who was one of the daughters of the aforesaid William, and Maud wife of Osbert Hamelyn, aged 30 years and more, the other daughter of the said William, are William’s next heirs. Writ, 12 October, 49 Edward III [1375]. SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Ipswich, Thursday the feast of St. Luke, 49 Edward III. Hintelisham. The manor, and the advowson of the church. A fine was lately levied in the present king’s court between William Pipard, knight, and Margery his wife, querents, and Geoffrey Gilbard, deforciant, touching the said manor and advowson, whereby William acknowledged them to be the right of the deforciant, who thereupon granted that after the death of Margery late the wife of Thomas [sic] Pipard, who then held them in dower, they should remain to the said William and Margery and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to Robert Fitz Elys and Margaret his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and with ultimate remainder to the right heirs of William. Margery wife of Thomas is dead; William and Margery died without heirs male of their bodies; and Robert died without issue by Margaret. Margaret afterwards married Warin de Isle, knight, and they entered on the premises by virtue of the said fine. On the day of Margaret’s death they held them in her right of the king in chief by service of a sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly. Date of death and heirs as above.
