=== Life Sketch ===
Sir Alexander Dunbar (also de Dunbar) was the 3rd son of Patrick, 7th Earl of Dunbar and his wife Cecilia. Younger brother of Patrick, 8th Earl of Dunbar and Sir John de Dunbar and brother of Ceclia.
Alexander married, however the name of his wife is not known, they had one son:
- Sir Patrick de Dunbar who fought at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356 and died traveling to the Holy Land.
His son Patrick married Isabella Randolph. Their oldest son George succeeded Alexander's nephew, the 9th Earl of Dunbar, to become the 10th Earl of Dunbar.
It is not known exactly when Alexander was born, however, it is known he was the 3rd son, born after Patrick and John. Patrick the oldest son was born in 1242, it is likely that Alexander was born about 1245.
It is also not known when Alexander died. He was alive on June 26 1331 when his son Sir Patrick quit-claimed his rights to Swinwood, he would have been in his late 80's by that time.
** The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy, which is normally an excellent source of information, incorrectly identifies Alexander as the son of Patrick the 8th Earl of Dunbar who was actually his brother. We know without a doubt that Alexander was the son of Patrick the 7th Earl of Dunbar because of the Turnberry Bond/Turnberry Band. Patrick the 7th Earl of Dunbar and his 3 sons Patrick, John and Alexander all signed and Alexander is specifically identified as 'Alexander, son of Patrick de Dunbar, Earl of Dunbar'. The Turnberry Bond was signed 20 September 1286, and Patrick the 8ths only known son, Patrick the 9th was born in 1282/1284, so any sibling would have been born after that date and would not have been old enough to be the signatory named on the bond. This same Alexander who signed the bond, is the father of Sir Patrick de Dunbar who quit-claimed Swinwood in 1331, we know this because of his seal.

ALEXANDER Dunbar (-after 1331[1623]). m ---. The name of Alexander’s wife is not known. Alexander & his wife had one child:
i) PATRICK Dunbar (-Candia, Crete [Oct/Dec] 1356). He fought at the battle of Poitiers 19 Sep 1356[1624]. m ISABEL Randolph, daughter of THOMAS Randolph Earl of Moray & his wife Isabel Stewart of Bonkyll . She was co-heiress of her brother John Earl of Moray in 1346. Her issue became sole heirs after the death of her older sister Agnes Ctss of Dunbar without surviving issue in [1367]. Patrick & his wife had four children:
(a) GEORGE Dunbar ([1336]-[1416/20]). He succeeded as Earl of Dunbar in 1368, following the resignation of his great uncle and re-grant of the earldom in his favour.
- see below.
(b) JOHN Dunbar (-before 15 Feb 1392). He was created Earl of Moray by his father-in-law Robert II King of Scotland 9 Mar 1372.
- EARLS of MORAY.
(c) AGNES Dunbar (-before 1378, bur Newbottle Monastery). David II King of Scotland granted revenue from "burgi…de Aberdeen…[et] de Hadyngton" to "Agneti de Dunbarr" by charter dated 21 Jan 1370[1625]. The date of her marriage is shown in Burke's Peerage, Vol. II, p. 2001, although this shows Agnes as the daughter of Patrick Earl of Dunbar & his second wife Agnes Randolph of Moray[1626], which is clearly impossible from a chronological point of view. Her parentage and marriage are confirmed by the undated charter under which Robert II King of Scotland confirmed the property of "Georgii de Dunbarr comitis Marchie consanguinei nostri" and which names "dñm Jacobum de Douglas milite dñm de Dalketh…[et] sororem nostram Agnetem de Dunbarr…uxorem"[1627]. Her place of burial is confirmed by the testament of her husband "Jacobus de Douglas dominus de Dalkeith", dated 30 Sep 1390, which requested burial "in monasterio…de Newbotyll juxta corpus quondam Agnetis socie mee"[1628]. m (21 Nov 1372) as his first wife, JAMES Douglas of Dalkeith and Arbroath, son of JOHN Douglas & his wife Agnes --- (-1420).
(d) [1629]ELIZABETH Dunbar . Burke's Peerage records the marriage of "Agnes" and John Maitland[1630]. m JOHN Maitland of Thirlestane and Lethington, son of ROBERT Maitland of Thirlestane & his wife --- Keith (-[1395]).

For sources, etc. see information received from Doug Hickling "THEANCESTRY OF MARGARET DUNBAR, WHO MARRIED ROBERT MUNRO, 14TH BARON OFFOULIS" in Notes under Margaret (of Cumnock) Dunbar The problem has been that, although Scots Peerage lists Sir From DougHickling "Alexander Dunbar of Westfield, Sheriff of Moray, it does not continuethe line because he was not a peer. As it happens, Margaret Dunbar wasdescended from this Sir Alexander Dunbar, the line from him being: SirJames Dunbar, second baron of Westfield, Sheriff of Murray, etc.; Sir James Dunbar of Cumnock and Westfield, Sheriff of Murray, etc.; andSir Alexander Dunbar of Cumnock and Westfield, Sheriff of Murray, etc.The Margaret who married Robert Munro 14th of Foulis was this Sheriff'sdaughter. I mentioned above that it was hard to find information on the successorsto the first Dunbar Sheriff of Moray because he and they were not peers. However, I found the information needed in Sir Robert Douglas's THEBARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, published in 1798. By some miracle, the UCBerkeley rare book library had this work in its collection and thequality of the paper was so high that they even made photocopies of itfor me. "

Sir Alexander, who is named as the third of the brothers in the compact of 1286 and elsewhere. He has a fee or grant of 20 merks sterling bestowed on him by King Alexander III which continued to be paid after the King's death, up to September 1289. There are other unimportant references to him, and he was alive on 26 June 1331, when his son Sir Patrick quit-claimed his rights in Swinwood to the monks of Coldingham. It is not known when he died. His seal, still attached to one of the receipts for his fee, shows a lion rampant within a double tressure. Legend, 'S Alexandri Filii Comitis de Dvnb.' The name of his wife is nowhere stated. [The Scots Peerage III:259-260]
_________________________
Sir Alexander Dunber, grandfather to George Dunbar, 10th Earl of Dunbar, has in some cases, mistakenly been attached to the wrong generation of Patrick Dunbar's. 'Complete Peerage' call him brother of Patrick de Dunbar, late Earl of March or Dunbar, which can be taken to mean three successive generations of Patrick de Dunbar's. Scots Peerage identifies the brother, Patrick de Dunbar, Earl of March and Dunbar, as the first Patrick Dunbar to style himself as Earl of March and Dunbar.

Note: The Turnberry Band, also known as the Turnberry Bond, was a pact between Scottish and Anglo-Irish nobles signed on 20 September 1286 at Turnberry Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland. The agreement may have concerned a campaign in Ireland, and may have later formed the basis that bound the group around the claim of the Bruce family to the Scottish throne.
