  Richard was the son of Ralph Basset and Eleanor de la Wade. He came of age in 1295, pointing to a birth date of about 1274.

  He fought against the Scots, and was captured in the Battle of Bannockburn on 24 June 1314 and died in captivity before 18 August 1314. The wardship of his lands and of his heir Ralph was sold to Richard de Grey for £800.
