His custody was fought over after his father's death. From his father's inquisition post mortem:
"Writ to the escheator to take into safe custody the heir of the said John, whose marriage pertains to the king, 12 June, 5 Edw. II."
"Endorsed with return, that the heir has been eloigned [1] from place to place and cannot be found."
Inq. Tuesday after St. Laurence, 6 Edw. II.
"In the life of the heir’s father, Sir Jordan de Metham took the heir to the manor of Belasise, and after the said John’s death by the command of Lady Sibyl late his wife, Thomas Verjon and John de Waghen eloigned him beyond the Humber, and after three weeks the said John de Waghen brought him back to the said Thomas, who delivered him to Sir William le Conestable who still detains him."
