Sir Joh de Mongomerie of Eaglesham, 'and also of Eastwood, of which place he was designed probably before he succeeded his brother. He was a witness to a donation by Walter, the High Steward, inter 1240 and 1250,' (Hist. Co. of Ary, ii.231) It is not unreasionable to suppose that Sir John was in the army raised by Alexander III, to meet the Norwegians under their king, Haco, whom he defeated on their landing in the Bay of Ayr, at the famous battle of Largs, in August, 1263. So much was feared from these marauders should they succeed in their invasion, that 'the whole available strength of the county was put in requisition,' and all the barons whose possessions lay contiguous to the Ayrshire coast could especially not fail to aid in the defence of their county.
Sir John died about 1285, leaving four sons and a daughter. [Family of Montgomery pp44-45]
------------------------------------------------------------
Sir John Montgomerie, who is styled 'of Eastwood' by his descendant, Sir William Mure of Rowallan, was apparently in possession, as at that date he is a witness to a charter of the Abbey of Paisley. Nothing further is known of him, unless, as is probable, he was the Sir John who did homage in 1296, and whose lands in the barony of Renfrew were granted by King Edward I between 1298 and 1300 to Sir John Swinburne. [The Scots Peerage III:425]
_________________________________
Sir John de Montgomerie, Knight, sixth of Eagleshame (1260-1285), succeeded his brother Sir Robert about 1260. He is styled John de Montgomerie of Eastwood, but probably he was so called only before he succeeded his brother in the family estate of Eagleshame. In addition to the charter above mentioned, to which he and his brother Robert are witnesses, he attests a charter of donation to the abbey of Paisley about 1260. He died about 1285. He is said to have married Margaret, daughter of William Murray, Baron of Bothwell, and left four sons and one daughter. [Memorials of Montgomerie I:12]
