  When Joanna Douglas was born in 1323, in Hermiston, Midlothian, Scotland, her father, Sir John Keith Marshall of Scotland, was 29 and her mother, Lady Muriel De Soules, was 38. She had at least 3 sons and 4 daughters with Sir Hugh Giffard Lord of Yester. She died on 15 February 1398, in Gifford, Garvald, Haddingtonshire, Scotland, at the age of 75, and was buried in Midlothian, Scotland, United Kingdom.

  Johanna Douglas was born about 1335, her parentage is not clearly ascertained.
  
  About 1355 she married Sir Hugh Gifford of Yester who inherited his father's Yester estates and his mother's Morham estates thus having lands from Roxburghshire in the Borders and Lothians and north in Perthshire and Angus.
  
  After Sir Hugh died Johanna was engaged to Sir Nigel Cunningham and as they were related in the third degree, Papal consent was granted for thier marriage in March 1365/36.
  
  Sir Nigel adopted the title of Yester through this marriage but her daughters on coming of full age each inherited a fourth part of the vast estate.
  
  Johanna was still alive in 1400 when her son-in-law Eustace (Tassy) Maxwell granted her lands from the Barony of Duncanlaw to bequeath to a chapel of her choice.
