=== Life Sketch ===
Alexander was the eldest son and heir of Walter Bailloch Stewart and Mary I, Countess of Menteith and was the Mormaer or Earl of Menteith succeeding his mother the de jure countess. The first mention of him in records is with his brother John de Menteith in a compact dated on 20 September 1286, at Turnberry, Carrick, between Bruce and the Stewarts. In another writ, of uncertain date, granted by their father to Kilwinning Abbey, he and his brother are styled Alexander and John de Menteith. Alexander joined with his father in a charter granting the church of Kippen to the Cambuskenneth Abbey situated within the earldom as a place of burial; the writ being dated 1286. He was appointed the Sheriff of Dumbarton in 1288. Prior to succeeding his father, Alexander was at Norham in 1291, and was among those who swore fealty to Edward I. Alexander was with his brother John at the Battle of Dunbar on 27 April 1296, and fled to Dunbar Castle where he and others were taken prisoner and he was committed to the Tower of London. His detention was not long, however, and he was liberated after promising to serve the English King, meeting with him at Elgin 27 July 1296. He repeated this promise, and swore fealty at Berwick a month later, on 28 August, as Alexander Comes Meneteth. Alexander then gave over two of his sons, Alan and Peter, as hostages. Alexander seems to have retired from public life after this, tending only to his family affairs. He died before 1306.

=== ALEXANDER (STEWART, later DE MENTEITH), ===
ALEXANDER (STEWART, later DE MENTEITH), EARL OF MENTEITH [SCT], 1st son and heir, was v.p., as Alisandre de Meneteth, one of the nobles who, (5 February 1283/4) supported the right of succession of the Maid of Norway to the crown of Scotland. In 1286 he and his younger brother )ohn, with their father, entered into a bond with other supporters of Bruce. He was among the barons du Realme de Escoce at Brigham, 17 March 1289/90. As Alexander de Menteith, son of the Earl of Menteith, he swore fealty to Edward I at Norham, 12 June 1291. In February 1292/3, as Sir Alexander de Menteth, Knight, he had a grant of the wardship of certain lands. In the spring of 1296 he was one of 7 Scottish earls who made a raid into England, and vainly besieged Carlisle, and, on 28 April following, was made prisoner at Dunbar, whence he was sent to the Tower. He did homage to Edward I, 27 July 1296, nominally at Elgin. In September he was definitely ranged with the English, and in June 1297 was in England. He married Maud, whose parentage is not known. He was living 26 September 1297, but died probably soon after, certainly before 1306. [Complete Peerage VIII:663-4]
_____________________________________
Alexander, Earl of Menteith, is first noted with his brother John in a compact between Bruce and the Stewarts on 20 September 1286, at Turnberry. In anther writ, of uncertain date, gratned by their father to the Abbey of Kilwinning, he and his brother are styled Alexander and John Menteith. They had therefore changed their family name from Stewart to Menteith. Alexander joined with his father in a charter granting the church of Kippen to the Abbey of Cambuskenneth to secure themselves a place of burial. This writ is said to be dated in 1286. He was at Norham in 1291, and swore fealty to Edward I, while he also appears in other matters before his succession, the date of which is uncertain, but was probably between 1292 and 1295. In any case he was the Earl of Menteith who with the Earls of Atholl, Ross, and others gathered a force and invaded England in revenge for Edward's savage attack on Berwick. Their army was defeated at Dunbar on 27 April 1296, and on that or the following day Menteith and others who had fled to Dunbar Castle were taken captive, and he was committed to the Tower. He was not, however, detained long as a prisone, but was liberated either before or shortly after a promise of service made by him to the English King, and dated at Elgin 27 July 1296. He repeated his promise, and swore fealty at Berwick a month later, on 28 August. He then left two of his sons in the King's hands as hostages. Perhaps this fact influenced his future movements, for, excepting some transactions dealing with the estates of Alexander Abernethy, and also fo Alexander of Argyll and his son, of which he was appointed guardian by Edward, he seems to have take no part in public affairs. At least nothing is recorded about him, except a letter to him from the English King on 26 September 1297, and the date of his death is not known. He married a lady named Matilda, whose surname has not been discovered. [The Scots Peerage VI:133-134]
=== In the years shortly after William Walla ===
In the years shortly after William Wallace was born, the Scottish King, Alexander III, married a beautiful young woman. They were in love with each other and happy to marry, but at the wedding ball a skeleton appeared and danced amongst the guests. It shook an ominous finger at the King before vanishing. Only a few months later, in 1286, the King was at a meeting in Edinburgh Castle. His bride awaited him at his castle in Fife. In his eagerness to be with her again, he decided to ride home after dark. His horse stumbled and both rider and mount plunged over the cliff at Kinghorn, and died on the rocky shore below. It was his death without an heir that led to the disputes over the succession of the throne, culminating in the War of Independence, (1297 -1305).
