=== MARY, presumed to be younger daughter an ===
MARY, presumed to be younger daughter and coheir of Maurice the younger, Earl of Menteith, married Walter LE STEWART, called Bailloch (i.e. Freckled), 3rd son of Walter, High Steward of Scotland, possibly by Beatrice, daughter of Gilchrist, EARL of Angus [SCT]. Tradition says that Walter accompanied Louis IX on his crusade, 1258-59. He belonged to the "English" party, in power 1255-58. On the expulsion of her sister Isabel from Scotland, the magnates procured the investiture of the said Walter with the Earldom, and he was put in possession of the lands, the question of ownership being reserved. His accounts as late sheriff of Ayr, 1264, show expenses in connection with the invasion of the Isles by the Norwegian King Hakon (1263), and he is said to have fought at the battle of Largs. After his investiture with the Earldom, about 1260, he remained in undisputed possession until about 1272, and in 1285 was (by implication) confirmed in the dignity. In July 1281 he was one of the guarantors of the marriage contract of Princess Margaret and King Eric of Norway, and escorted her to that country the following month. On 5 February 1283/4 he was one of the earls acknowleding the Maid of Norway as their Lady, and heir of the kingdom of Scotland, and was, in 1289, sheriff of Dunbarton. He took part in the assembly at Brigham, 17 March 1289/90, which confirmed the proposal of marriage between Prince Edward of England and Queen Margaret of Scotland; in the competition for the crown, after her death, 1292, he was one of the commissioners for Bruce; on 13 June of that year he did homage to Edward I, as overlord of Scotland, and was present when Baliol did homage at Norham, 20 November 1292. He died before 28 April 1296, his wife having predeceased him, probably before 1286. [Complete Peerage VIII:662-3]

" Mhuireadhaich or Mary, daughter of Muireadhach II, Mormaer of
Menteith, was Countess of Menteith, successor to her sister Isabella
(Iosbail). She inherited the title from her father, and married Walter
Bailloch, son of Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland. By the
time of the death of Walter Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, jure uxoris Earl
of Menteith in 1258, she may have already been married. In 1260,
Isabella was arrested (along with her new husband, an English knight
called John Russell) for the poisoning of her late husband; by the
month of April 1261, Walter and Mary were ruling the province as Count
and Countess.
She died before her husband, but the exact year is not known. Her
husband may have been alive as late as 1294. She and he had two sons,
Alexander, the next ruler of the province, and John, the famous
betrayer of William Wallace.
