John III, named the triumphator, was Duke of Brabant and Limburg from 1312 to 1355. He was the only child of Duke John II and Margarete of England. At the beginning of his reign, he had to deal with the problem that the possession of the Brabant citizens abroad had been confiscated because of the debts of the dukes Johann I. and Johann II, and on the other hand, that the advisors of the young duke the charter of Kortenberg did not respect. Both problems were solved by recognizing the Charter and by taking the others for the Duke's debts.
The attempt of the French king to isolate Flanders economically led to a dispute with Brabant, as this affected the economic interests of the duchy. In 1315 he supported the Bishop of Liège, Adolf II of the Mark, in the uprising of his subjects.
At the beginning of the Hundred Years' War John stood at the side of England, and accompanied his King Edward III. on his campaigns. In return, Philip VI. of France once again confiscated the Brabant property abroad, which led to a revolt of the citizens of Brussels against their duke. John III. reacted by beheading one of the leaders. From 1340, he separated from England and leaned closer to France, married his daughters with French allies, the Duke of Luxembourg, Count Flanders, and Duke Rainald III. of funds, as well as his heirs Heinrich with a four-year-old daughter of the French crown prince Johann.
On May 13th, 1351, Duke Johann and his son Herzog Gottfried von Limburg (* 1347, † 1352) agreed with the Kurköln and the cities of Cologne and Aachen for ten years the Maas-Rhein peace agreement.
Since Johann's three sons had died before him and had no male descendants, his eldest daughter Johanna inherited the duchies.
