Royal Ancestry---GUY DE BRYAN/BRIENNE/BRIAN
Sir Hugh le Despenser, 3rd Lord le Despenser, died 8 Feb. 1348/9, and was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire. His widow, Elizabeth, married (3) before 10 July 1350 (as his 2nd wife) GUY DE BRYAN (or BRIAN), K.G., Lord Bryan [see CAREW 10.ii], of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, Walwyn's Castle, Pembrokeshire, Clifton Dartmouth and Hardness and Slapton, Devon, etc.,
Governor of St. Briavel's Castle, Warden of the Forest of Dean, son and heir of Guy de Bryan, Knt., of Walwyn's Castle, Pembrokeshire, Batdeford (in Ipplepen), Clifton Dartmouth and Hardnegs, and Tor Bryan, Devon, etc., by Gwenllian, daughter of Gruffudd ap Lloyd.
He was born c.1309 (being of age in 1330). They had three sons, Guy, Knt., William, Knt. [see ECHINGHAM 10], and Philip. He was first armed at Stannow Park in 1327.
In 1330 the king settled a dispute between him and his father, Guy de Bryan, senior, relative to the barony and castle of Walwayn, Pembrokeshire.
In 1349 he was granted an annuity of 200 marks for bearing the King's Standard against his enemies at Calais.
He was summoned to Parliament from 25 Nov. 1350 to 6 Dec. 1389, whereby he is held to have become Lord Bryan.
He was constantly entrusted with martial and diplomatic affairs of the highest importance. His wife, Elizabeth, died at Ashley, Hampshire 30 (or 31) July, 1359, and was buried with her 2nd husband in Tewkesbury Abbey.
In 1361 he was Ambassador to the Pope. In 1369 he was appointed Admiral of the Fleet. In 1367 he purchased the manor of Woodsford, Dorset from John Whitfield, Knt. In 1377 he gave an endowment to four chaplains for the chapel of St. Mary at Slapton, Devon, which he augmented in 1386 and again in 1389. SIR GUY DE BRYAN, Lord Bryan, died 17 August 1390, and was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.
=== 1st and last Lord Bryan
===
1st and last Lord Bryan
Sir Guy de Bryan, 1st and last Lord Bryan was the son of Sir Guy de Bryan. He married, firstly, Joan de Carreu, daughter of Sir John de Carreu, before 1348. He married, secondly, Elizabeth Montagu, daughter of William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Catherine Grandison, from 1349 to 10 July 1350.
Sir Guy de Bryan, 1st and last Lord Bryan was also known as Sir Guy de Bryene. He held the office of Warden of the Forest of Dean between 1341 and 1390. He held the office of Governor of St. Briavel's Castle between 1341 and 1390. On 15 January 1349/50 he was awarded 200 marks p.a. for bearing the King's standard against his enemies at Calais. He was created 1st Lord Bryan [England by writ] on 25 November 1350. He held the office of Ambassador to the Pope in 1361. He held the office of Admiral of the Fleet in 1369. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 31 December 1369.
Although there is a tomb for Guy De Bryan in Tewkesbury Abbey, he was actually buried at Slapton Parish Church, Devon. From "EFFIGY OF SIR GUY DE BRYAN, K.G": "Sir Guy de Bryan, K.G., lord Bryan, "departed this life on Wednesday next after the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin," 1390 (Stothard, op. Cit., 73). According to Gerard, he was buried at Slapton in Devon where he had founded a small priory, and not within his tomb-chest at Tewksbury."
According to an old article entitled "Sir Guy De Brian, K.G. " by R. G. F. Stanes, M.A.: Sir Guy "founded a College near his dwelling house [at Slapton] and was buried in the Church under a fair stone," but "...in hope of some treasure, his tomb was demolished...."

=== Most notable of this Devonshire family ===
Most notable of this Devonshire family was Guy, Lord Bryan, who bore arms (or, three piles in point, azure) at the siege of Calais. He was summoned to Parliament in 1350, and in 1369, King Edward III conferred upon him the Garter. His ancestry is ascribed to the ancient Counts of Brienne, some of whose offspring are said to have come to England with William the Conqueror. Thus the surname BRYAN appears to be a place-name, derived from Brienne-le-Chateau, which was the capitol of a countship during the time of Hugh Capet, in the former province of Champagne, France. Brienne-le-Chateau is 23 miles N. E. of Troyes, France. He performed important missions and did important military and naval services in the time of Edward III and Richard II. In 1361 he was made Admiral of the King's Fleet, and in 1370 he was elected the 57th Knight of the Garter. Source: The Spear and the Spindle: Ancestors of Sir Francis Bryan: T. A. Fuller, 1993

=== Baron Guy's chief seat was in the march ===
Baron Guy's chief seat was in the marches of Wales, received command to assist the Earl of Gloucester against the Welch, and in 42nd of the same reign (1216-1272) he had a military summons for similar service. We find him subsequently, however, arrayed under the baronial banner and constituted, after the victory of Lewes, Governor of Castles Cardigan and Kermerdyn in Wales, but he soon afterwards returned to his allegiance to the king and was one of the sureties for Robert de Vere, Earl of Oxford, in 51st of Henry III, that this nobleman should deport himself peaceably thenceforth, and abide by the dictum of Kenilworth for the redemption of his lands. At the battle of Lewis he was on the part of Simon de Montfort and his rebellious adherents, but Sir Guy de Bryan, also shortly after the battle, made his peace and returned to obedience. This Guy de Bryan married Maud, daughter and sole heir of Henri de Tracy.
