3 - Battle of the Largs
1 October 1283: Invasion of Scotland by Haakon, King of Norway, attacked on the beaches by gathering Scottish forces, beginning the Battle of the Largs. 5 October 1283: Norwegians abandon invasion of Scotland, leaving ships and wounded on the beach. Despite the victory of Brian Boru over the Danes in Ireland in 1014, the Scandinavian incursions into the Celtic nations took a long time to fade away. It would be nearly 270 years after the Battle of Clontarf before the ScandinaviansÙu last hurrah in the spectacular Battle of the Largs. In the year 1283 the English were just consolidating their conquest of Wales with the execution on 3 October of Dafydd, the last native Prince of Wales. The power of Norway still dominated the North Sea and reached around the coast of Scotland into the Irish Sea, hedging the growing power of Scotland with a chain of island possessions that included the Orkneys, Shetland, the Hebrides, and the Isle of Mann. When ScotlandÙus boy king Alexander III turned 21 in 1262, one of his first acts was to try to purchase the Hebrides from Norway. The offer was refused, but when the Earl of Ross led a bloody raid on the Norwegian-held Isle of Skye, the Norwegian King Haakon prepared for an armed showdown with Scotland. Haakon assembled a fleet of 100 ships, the largest armada yet seen in those waters, and was joined by Magnus, the King of Mann, along with other Scandinavian jarls. But after wasting the summer in fruitless sparring and maneuvering, Haakon divided his forces, sending most of the Manx fleet off on coastal raids and dispatching 40 other ships to be dragged overland and floated in Loch Lomond, a novel if pointless tour de force. King Alexander in the meantime was biding his time, keeping his field armies intact behind a defensive screen of castles. The opportunity he was waiting for came at last on 1 October, when the first storms of autumn forced Haakon to decide between abandoning the campaign or chancing a risky landing on the Scottish coast. Haakon chose to go for the landing. The Norwegians struggled through the storm-roiled surf on the west coast of Scotland only to be met on the beaches by a Scottish vanguard of archers and mailed knights, who commenced a running battle with the Norwegians on 2 October. The bedraggled Norwegians were in no shape to deal with a hot landing zone, but found themselves unable to put back out to sea due to the worsening weather. They were equally unable to gain a secure beachhead for themselves in the face of the growing numbers of Scots that Alexander dispatched from their inland bases as soon as he learned of the Norwegian predicament. After some 72 hours of debilitating and almost continuous combat, the weather lifted just enough to enable the remaining Norwegians to make a hasty evacuation, leaving most of their dead and wounded on beaches lit by the burning hulks of their ships. The Battle of the Largs marked the rise of independent Scotland and the terminal decline of NorwayÙus North Sea hegemony. The victory was followed by the death of Haakon, NorwayÙus cessation of the Hebrides to Scotland, and the Scottish takeover of the Orkneys and the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Scotland eventually gained Shetland too, as a wedding present, but that is a story for another day. [ http://www.celticleague.org/ ]

------------------------------------------------
Local tradition says Catherine Stirling had a deformed brother known by the sobriquet of ‘Jackie Stirlin,' who was heir to the property. He was to marry the daughter of a neighbouring baron, but this union did not approve itself to Sir Alexander and his lady. Remonstrance proving of no avail, the laird was despatched at a place a little to the north of the Castle, and the body was buried in the family vault. The crime embittered the latter days of the Lord of Edzell, and he made atonement for the murderous deed of his youth by large gifts to the Church. He rebuilt the Church of Finhaven, and gifted it to the Cathedral of Brechin, then went on a pilgrimage to Palestine.
The prebendary had a stall in the choir of Brechin, and said mass daily for his safe conduct. Gifts to the Church and penance have ever been Rome's panacea for crimes, even of the blackest dye. We are told of a better way. The blood of Christ cleanseth from all sin."
Sir Alexander Lindsay profited little by his pilgrimage and the daily masses for his soul. They did not stay the hand of the avenging angel, he having struck the penitent down long before he reached Palestine.

=== Sir Alexander de Lindsay, Lord of Glenes ===
Sir Alexander de Lindsay, Lord of Glenesk, Knight Banneret, second surviving son of David, Lord of Crawford, began life as squire to Thomas Stewart, Earl of Angus, his cousin. He inherited his mother's lands in Angus, and also acquired some of the baronies allotted to his aunt Margaret Abernethy, Countess of Angus. He further acquired Glenesk by mariage with the daughter of Sir John Stirling of Edzell. The union of these three great estates constituted the bulk of what was afterwards styled the earldom of Crawford, and extending, as they did, over about two-thirds of the whole county of Forfar, caused the district to be styled by a recent writer the land of the Lindsays. Sir Alexander was party to a truce with England as 'chevalier et baron,' 1369. He sealed with his nephew the settlements of the Crown, 1371-73, and was Justiciar 1378. He had many safe-conducts from Kings Edward III and Richard II, and on 4 December 1381 he obtained a passport entitling him to pass through England to the Holy Land, on which pilgrimage he died. Sir Alexander had hereditary pensions or annuities granted to him from the customs or burgh rents of Aberdeen, Crail, and Forfar. Having been granted the barony of the Byres by his elder brother, he transferred it to his youngest brother, Sir William. He witnessed many royal charters, and was conspicuous in the political life of his day. He married, first, Katherine, daughter and co-heir of Sir John Stirling of Glenesk, Knight, the marriage-contract being confirmed by King David in 1358. She died before 1378, having had issue: David, Earl of Crawford; Sir Alexander, of Baltrody; and a daughter married to David Stewart, Earl Palatine of Strahern.
Sir Alexander married, secondly, before 19 October 1378, Marjory, daughter of Sir John Stewart of Ralstoun, neice of King Robert II. She afterwards married Sir Henry de Douglas of Langnewtoun before 19 May 1384, by whom she had issue, and was again a widow in 1393. She assigned her terce of the Crail annuity to the Friars Minors of Dundee. By her, who was dead in 1442, Sir Alexander had issue: Sir William of Rossie; Sir Walter of Kynneff; and Euphemia.
Sir Alexander died at Candia in Crete, October 1381, and was succeeded by his eldest son. [The Scots Peerage III:12-15]

=== Alexander served as a Regent of Scotland ===
Alexander served as a Regent of Scotland during the minority of Alexander III. He shared this office with Robert de Bruce. In 1263 Alexander and a Scottish knight named Piers de Curry led the Scottish army at the Battle of Largs where the Norwegians under King Hakon (Hacho) were totally defeated. Alexander's territories were those which were most immediately threatened, and it is probable that he and the men of Strathclyde were at the front of the battle, thus history ascribes the victory to Walter. Later he seized the islands of Arran, Bute, and Man thus ending the 100 years of struggle between the Scots and the Norsemen that was the reason behind Alexander's great-grandfather, Walter Fitz-Alan settling in Renfrew in 1138. Alexander's second son was John Stewart of Bonkill, who fell at the Battle of Falkirk. This son in turn had seven legitimate sons, four of them were the progenitors of some of the major Stewart lineages. - Alexander, the eldest, was the ancestor of the Stewart Earls of Angus whose line failed in 1377. - Alan, the second son, was the ancestor of the Stewart Earls of Lennox. The heir of this line, Lord Darnley married Mary Queen of Scots, and became ancestor of the later Stewart kings. The Earls of Galloway are also descended from this line. - Walter, the third son, was the ancestor of the present Earl of Galloway. - James, the fourth son, was the ancestor of the Earls of Atholl, Buchan, and Traquair, as well as the Stewart Lords of Lorn and Innermeath. - The 'Stewarts of Appin' are descended from the last Stewart Lord of Lorn, who died in 1469, and a lady of the Clan MacLaren. The Appen Stewart took a prominent part on the side of Bonnie Prince Charley under Stewart of Ardshiel. - The 'Stewarts of Grandfully' are descended from Alexander, third son of Sir John Stewart of Innermeath and Lorn and brother to Robert, 1st Lord Lorn and the famous 'Black Knight of Lorn'. - The first 'Stewart of Atholl' was Sir John of Balveny who was the son of James Stewart, the Black Knight of Lorn (2nd son of Sir John Stewart of Innermeath and Lorn), and Joan, Queen Dowager of Scotland, widow of King James I.

He and his brothers John and Walter accompanied his brother-in-law, the Earl of Dunbar, on Crusade (1248-50) for St Louis IX, King ofFrance. After Dunbar's death, Alexander led the Scots pilgrams. In 1263 he led the right wing of King Alexander III's forces to victory in the Battleof Largs, Ayrshire, over Haco, the Dane, who subsequently surrendered the Western Isles and the Isle of Man to his Stewart pursuers, Alexanderand his brother Walter. For this service, King Alexander III granted theBarony of Garlies in Galloway to the Stewart and his successors male. Stillin 1263, he was sent to court of Henry III of England to demand dowry arrears. In 1281 he was a guarantor of the marriage of Princess Margaret to Eric, King of Norway.
