“Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013):
“MARGERY (or MARGARET) BARDOLF, married before 8 June 1298 MICHAEL DE POYNINGS (or PONYNGES), Knt., of Poynings, Crawley, Hangleton, Pyecombe, and Slaugham, Sussex, Wormingford and Tendring, Essex, Hockwold, Norfolk, Bures, Suffolk, etc., Knight of the Shire for Sussex, 1312/3, son and heir of Luke de Poynings, Knt., of Poynings, Crawley, Pyecombe, Slaugham, and Twineham, Sussex, Wormingford, Essex, etc., by his wife, Hawise, widow of Reynold de Vautort. They had two sons, Thomas, Knt., and Michael, and three daughters, Joan, Hawise, and Margery. He was summoned to attend the king on urgent matters in 1294. He had letters of protection granted to him in 1295, he then going to Scotland on the king's service. In 1296 he was enrolled for defence of the coast, as a non-resident knight of Sussex. In 1296 the king ordered an enquiry be made regarding the persons who, during the absence of Michael de Poynings in Scotland on the king's service, broke his park at Slaugham, Sussex, hunted therein, and carried away deer. In 1297 he was summoned for service overseas. In 1299 he was granted letters of protection, he then going with Henry de Percy beyond seas. In 1303 John, Earl of Warenne, requested that Chancellor of England grant him protection and exemption, he then going with the said earl in the Scottish war. He and his wife were summoned to attend the Coronation of King Edward II in 1308. He was granted letters of protection in 1308, he then going to France in the company of John de Warenne, Earl of Surrey. SIR MICHAEL DE POYNINGS was probably killed at the Battle of Bannockburn 24 June 1314. His widow, Margery, presented to the church of Hockwold, Norfolk in 1329. In 1333 the king recovered the right of presentation to the church of Hokewold, Norfolk in the court of King's Bench against her. Margery was living 24 Feb. 1333/4.
