Biography
:"The earliest record relating to the manor of Cheadle is contained inthe Inquisition post mortem of Geoffrey De Chedle, sonof the Geoffrey de Dutton before mentioned, who died in 1294."
:"And they say that Geoffrey, the son of the said Geoffrey de Chedle, is his next heir, and is aged 26 years." [East Cheshire: Past and Present: Or, A History of the Hundred of Macclesfield, in the County Palatine of Chester. From Original Records, Volume 1, p 169 ]
Notes
It appears that the Geoffrey de Cheadle, who was the father of Geoffrey and Roger, should be married to a Margaret/Margery. At least, as hislast wife, who survived him.
:"Margaret, who was the wife of Geoffrey de Chedle, claimed in dower. [23, 24 Edw. I.pi. 16.]" [Reports from Commissioners, Volume 27, p 45. ]
:"Cheadle, Margaret, who was the wife of Geoffrey de" [Reports from Commissioners, Volume 27, p 43. ]
:"Cheadle, Margery, who was the wife of Geoffrey de" [Reports from Commissioners, Volume 27, p 47. ]
However, there is a Geoffrey, in the Chedle line, that does marry Agnes de Massy, but she also survives her husband.
:"Hamon de Massy, baron of Dunham-Massy, gave unto Geffrey Dutton, sonof Geffrey Dutton, all his land in Bolinton, to wit, all the moiety of Bolinton, with Agnes his daughter in free marriage; rendring yearly a pair of gilded spurs at the nativity of St. John Baptist: about the beginning of Henry the Third. Lib. C. fol. 150, a.
:The same Agnes in her widowhood, by the name of Agnes de Nechel (perhaps meant for Etchells) late wife of sir Geffrey de Chedle, gave unto her eldest son, Geffrey de Chedle, all that land of Bolinton which shehad of the gift of Hamon Massy her father, lib. C. fol. 150, b. William de Massy being then parson of Rosthorne, and William de Baggiley parson of Chedill, under Henry the Third." [The history of the county palatine and city of Chester: compiled from original evidences in public offices, the Harleian and Cottonian mss., parochial registers, private muniments, unpublished ms. collections of successive Cheshire antiquaries, and a personal survey of every township in the county; incorporated with a republication of King's Vale royal, and Leycester's Cheshire antiquities. By George Ormerod, p 410 ]
Note that states "about the beginning of Henry the Third". Henry III'sreign started in 1216, some 30 years before this Geoffrey, father of Geoffrey and Roger, was born. Way to early for him to be her husband. But, about right for him to be her son.
Also note Agnes' age, born abt 1188, which would seem accurate, with her parents' ages and them marrying abt 1180.
Also note the gap, between Geoffrey I (1158 - 1189) andGeoffrey II (1249 - bef. 1294).
The Chedle genealogies only have two Geoffrey's before the Geoffrey and Roger brothers.
:"Geoffrey de Dutton, son of Hugh de Dutton of Dutton":"Geoffrey De Chedle, son of the Geoffrey de Dutton before mentioned, who died in 1294"
It looks like there should be 3. Geoffrey I; then a Geoffrey II, married to Agnes; then a Geoffrey III, married to a Margaret; and then brothers Geoffrey IV and Roger.
