Hijo primogénito de una antigua familia de mozárabes toledanos, que sirvió en los círculos cortesanos de la Monarquía. Su antepasado, Esteban Hambrán, confirmaba los privilegios reales de Alfonso VII con el título de alguacil y zalmedina de Toledo, y su padre, García Yáñez, fue alguacil de Toledo y vasallo de Alfonso X, quien le donó, en 1254, el señorío territorial de las villas de Magán y Mocejón, en el término jurisdiccional de Toledo.
Por influencia de su padre, entró a formar parte de los vasallos del Rey Sabio que fueron destinados a la casa del infante don Sancho, siendo uno de los caballeros que lucharon con el infante durante la guerra civil que le enfrentó con su padre Alfonso X. A partir de la subida al trono de Sancho IV, su importancia en la Corte fue reforzada por su hermano, el privado real Gómez García de Toledo, abad de Valladolid, al ser nombrado portero mayor del reino de Castilla. En Toledo desempeñó el cargo, de tradición familiar, de alguacil mayor.
En 1260 su padre le donó en mayorazgo, el señorío territorial de la villa de Mocejón, que fue intercambiada en 1265 por la de Magán. Por sus servicios al rey Sancho IV, éste le concedió los señoríos jurisdiccionales de Cervera de los Montes, en 1285, y de Mejorada y Segurilla en 1288, desgajándolos del término municipal de Talavera, con la posibilidad de repoblarlos según el fuero de Toledo.
Murió el 14 de octubre de 1288, y fue inhumado en la capilla funeraria familiar de la catedral de Toledo, donde se conserva su lápida.
