Nicholas Stapleton, just of the King’s Bench, 1272-89; Justice Itinerant 3 EDW I, co. Gloucester, and in 16 EDW I for co. Dorset, had a free warren in all his domain lands of Stapleton, Wath, Kirkby Fletham etc., 1272; lived at West Hathelsay; present at the Council at Hereford, when Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, was made to surrender Bristol to the king, 9 June 1265 (Palgrave: Parl. Writs), and sat on the trial of David, king of Wales, brother of Llewellyn, 30 Sept 1282; had committed to his care the Honor of Richmond during the absence of the Earl (ca. 1280). He died in 1290. He married [Margaret] Bassett of North Morton and Hathelsay, daughter of Miles Bassett, who had free warren in Hathelsay, co. Yorkshire, 1202 (Escheator), buried at Drax.

- Miles m (1) Sibill de Bella Aqua (Bellew) and (2) Cecilia
- Gilbert had custody of the Hospital of St. Leonard, York for life
- Julian m. Richard Windsor and was ancestor to the Earls of Plymouth
