Margaret Stewart was a daughter of Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland, and his wife Bethóc, daughter of Gille Críst, Earl of Angus. Margaret was one of 5 daughters and 5 sons born to her parents, her siblings were: Alexander, Robert, John, Walter, William, Beatrix, Christian, Eupheme, and Sybella.
Margaret married Níall, Mormaer (Earl) of Carrick, together they are known to have had 4 daughters, but no sons.
Only the name of their oldest daughter, Marjorie (Margaret), is known.
Margaret's husband Niall was also the Chieftan of his clan. On 12 September 1255, having no male heirs, Niall granted the chiefship of the clan to his nephew Roland and his heirs.
Niall died in 1256 and as the oldest daughter, Marjorie succeeded him as 3rd Countess of Carrick, she was still just a child at the time.
Margaret and Niall's daughter Marjorie married 2 times descendants of her 1st marriage to Adam of Kilconquhar became the Randolph Earls of Moray.
2nd Marjorie married Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale. Their oldest son become King Robert I of Scotland. Their oldest daughter Isabel married Eric II of Norway and became Queen of Norway. Another son Edward became High King of Ireland for a time.
Through her grandchildren Margaret Stewart was ancestress of several royal houses, through King Robert I she was also ancestress of the Stewart kings of Scotland.
Although someone has noted that Margaret Stewart died on 12 March 1255, the source of this information is not noted.
It is not known when Margaret died.

!Her name was Isabel or Margaret, her parents not surely identified in Line 121-C, p. 109 of the Seventh Edition of Weis. In The Book of Bruce,Ancestors and Descendants of King Robert of Scotland, by Lyman Horace Weeks, pub. 1907 by the American Society of New York, on p.264, it says: The founder of the House of Carrioc-Fergus was the Lord of Galloway who m. Elizabeth, the dau. of Henry I. She died in 1161. They had two sons, Gilbert and Uchtred (who was murdered). Gilbert died 1185/6. He was the father of Neil Carrick, Regent of Scotland and guardian of Alexander II, King of Scotland. He married Margaret, dau. of Walter, Steward of Scotland. His daughter, Marjory (Carrick) de Kilconcath married Robert Bruce (8th) and became the Countess of Carrick. This alliance, repeated several generations later when Marjory Bruce, dau. of King Robert Bruce m. Walter, head of the House of Stewart of Scotland.
