=== Life Sketch ===
The Life Summary of Alan
When Alan Montgomery was born on 11 January 1188, in Innerwick, Haddingtonshire, Scotland, his father, Alan Montgomery Of Eaglesham, was 33 and his mother, Mary de Saint Martin, was 44. He had at least 4 sons with Cassilas Stair. He died on 7 March 1286, in his hometown, at the age of 98.
Alan de Montgomerie was the son of Sir John de Montgomerie and Helen of Kent.[1][2]
A birth date of circa January 20, 1199 has been reported. [citation needed]
Alan's known children are:[2]
Robert
John
Henry
Alan
Research Notes
Paul says[1] Alan is the son of a Robert Montgomerie not John and although he state there are three sons he lists four so the error is likely in his stating it was only three.

=== Sir Alan Mundegumbri, Knight, fourth of ===
Sir Alan Mundegumbri, Knight, fourth of Eaglesham (1220-1234), who succeeded his father in the estates of Eagleshame and Thornton in Renfrewshire, and Innerwice in East Lothian, about 1220. Sir Alan comes chiefly under notice during the time he possessed the parternal estates; but seems to have held 'divers lands in tenemento de Innerwick' before his father's death. Between the years 1200 and 1231, we find him as a witness to the charter of Alan, the son of Walter, the founder of the monastery of Paisley. He is a witness to the charter of Alan, the son of Walter, the founder of the monastery of Paisley, 'de decimis denariis de Maphelia,' of date 1202 or 1203; and certainly not later than 1204, as Alan died that year. In the reign of Alexander II, 1214-1249, we find from the chartularies of Paisley, Kelso and Melrose, that Sir Alan was a witness to many writs and charts of donation to all those houses. From the Register of Paisley, it appears that he was a witness ot the charter of the lands between Old Patrick and Espedie, granted by Walter, grandson of the founder of the abbey of Paisley, from 1208 to 1218; that he was a witness to the charter of Malcolm Locard, of six acres of land in Symontoun of Kyil, about 1210; and that he was a witness to the charter of Walter, son of Alan the High Steward, concerning the ordination of the first abbot of Paisley in 1220. In the Kelso Register there is an agreement dated 1221, between Herbert, abbot of Kelso, and Sir Alan de Montgumery, Knight, regarding the tithes of Innerwick, which had been for some time disputed between him and the convent. He was a witness to 'carta Wilelmi Walensis de terra per divisas,' to 'carta confirmatio Walteri filii Alani de Innerwick,' and to the confirmation charter of the same concerning Edmundestun, all in the reign of Alexander II. Sir Alan died about 1233 or 1234. [Memorials of Montgomerie I:10-11]
___________________________
Alan Montgomerie is, according to Sir William Fraser*, the next in succession, and he is certainly the next on record as the dates go. But he does not appear before 1177, and the references to him are later than the dates assigned to him by Sir William, charters of the second Walter FitzAlan being confused with those of his grandfather, pardonably enough as writs of that period are, for the most part, undated. He certainly witnessed several charters in the time of Alan FitzWalter, the second High Steward (1177-1204), and though the dates of some cannot be determined, yet where the dates can be ascertained, the references are usually late. Thus, he is a witness to a charter by Alan FitzWalter to the Abbey of Paisley, dated not earlier than 1202 or 1203, and from that date he appears in varous writs down to 1221, before which he received the honour of knighthood. In that year he entered into an agreement with Herbert, Abbot of Kelso, as to the tithes of Innerwick, which had been in dispute betwixt them. [The Scots Peerage III:423-424]
*For some reason 'Scots Peerage', which has followed the lineage of Sir William Fraser's 'Memorials' until this point and from this point on, choses to make this Sir Alan Montgomerie son of Robert Montgomerie and skip two entire generations. It is as though two pages of 'Memorials' were skipped or combined and Sir Paul confused or combined Sir Alan, the second and Sir Alan, the fourth, which explains his confusion about the dates of the charters. He lists John, the third who married Helen de Kent as one of the sons of his 'combined' Alan yet does not explain in his account of the lineage how the brother of Robert who succeeded in 1260 is not the same John who married Helen de Kent (which he wasn't)
_______________________________
Sir Alan de Montgomerie of Eaglesham, "Miles," so designated in the chartulary of Kelso. "During his father's lifetime, he got a charter of divers of lands in 'tenemento de Innerwick,' and is witness to many charters of donations to the monastery of Paisley, inter 1204 and 1231. He possessed lands at Innerwick, in East Lothian, and in Lanarkshire, of which Renfrewshire then formed a part, as appears from the chartularies of Kelso and Paisley. He witnessed a charter granted by Walter, grandson of the founder of the Abbey of Paisley, of the lands between Old Patrick and Espedie, in the time of Alexander II, (1214-1249), and two charters by Alan, Walter's father, in the previous reign, (William, 1166-1214). He was also a witness to the charter of Robert Avenel, who married his mother's sister, of his wood of Polwarth, to Richard, Abbot of Kelso, in 1221, at which time Sir Alan settled with the abbot about his tithes of the lands of Innerwick, which had been in dispute between him and the convent. === Alan Mundegumbri, Kight, Fourth of Eagle ===
Alan Mundegumbri, Kight, Fourth of Eagleshame [1220-1230] Alan succeeded his father in the estates of Eagleshame and Thornton in Renfewshire and Innerwick in East Lothian about 1220. In the Kelso Register there is an agreement dated 1221, between Herbert, abbot of Kelso and Sir Alan de Mundegumery, Knight, regarding the tithes of Innerwick, which had been for some time disputed between him and the convent. Sir Alan Montgomerie of Eaglesham, designated as Miles in Chartulary of Kelso, obtained title to lands at Innerwich in East Lothian and in Lanarkshire in the lifetime of his father. He was witness to the charters granted by Alan Stewart, son of the founder, 1166 and 1214 and to one granted by Walter the grandson, founder of the Abbey and Monastery of Paisley 1214-31. Sir Alan died about 1233/34
