- Gender: M

- http://familysearch.org/v1/TitleOfNobility: 7th Lord of Eaglesham with note: but his son Sir Alexander was apparently 9th Baron of Eaglesham - who was 8th?
- The+origin+of+the+Montgomery+name: with note: "Scotland magazine" states the belief that the Montgomery clan of Scotland originated with a Viking named Gomeric (otherwise referred to as "Gomerici", "Gumarick" and Gommeri). Gomeric settled on a hilltop estate in Normandy which was called "Mount Gomeric", or “Mont Gommeri”, which eventually evolved into the Montgomery family name.
The majority of historians opt for a Scandinavian origin of the Montgomery family, according to Luc De Boever, who wrote "The Montgommerys from the Vikings to our Present Day".

=== Life Sketch ===
John de Montgomerie, 7th Lord of Eaglesham
Birthdate: circa 1265
Birthplace: Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, Scotland
Death: Died 1328 in Eaglesham,,Renfrewshire,Scotland
Immediate Family:
Son of Sir John Montgomerie of Eastwood and Margaret Moray of Bothwell
Husband of Janet Erskine
Father of Alexander Montgomerie of Eaglesham; Marjory de Montgomerie of Eaglesham and William Montgomerie, of Eaglesham
Brother of Margaret de Montgomerie; Thomas Montgomery of Sterling; Murthaw Montgomery and Alan Montgomery
Sir John de Montgomerie of Eaglesham & Eastwood, "del conte Tamark"; Great Baron of Scotland before 1291.
Sir John de Montgomerie of Eaglesham and Eastwood, is designated "del Conte de Lanark" in Prynne's Collections - the lordship of Eaglesham and Eastwood, as well as the whole of Renfrewshire, being then in Lanarkshire. He was one of the Great Barons of Scotland summoned to appear at Berwick, in 1291, and was afterwards, with many of his countrymen, 'it is said, obliged to swear fealty to Edward I, though his name does not appear on the Ragman's Roll, as do those of his two brothers. Almost all the barons and gentry at that time, particularly those in the Lowlands, took their oath to Edward, Bruce himself not hesitating to be among the number. As soon as Bruce asserted his claim to the Scottish throne, Sir John had joined his standard, as did most of those who, in 1296, had been obliged to take their oath to the English monarch, and remained a steady friend to the independence of his country.
"He married Janet, daughter of John Erskine of Erskine, also one of the barons who, in 1296, swore fealty to Edward, and left issue two sons and a daughter (Hist. Co. of Ayr II:261, 276)

=== Sir John who succeeded his father, Rober ===
Sir John who succeeded his father, Robert about 1285. Sir John Montgomerie of Eaglesham and Eastwood and indeed the whole of Rengrewshire, were included in Lanark; hence we find this second Sir John designated as del-Conte de Lanark in Prynne Collections, was one of the great Barons of Scotland, summoned to appear at Berwick in 1291, and later compelled to swear fealty to Edward I. John married Janet, daughter of John Erskine of Erskine, one of the Barons who swore fealty to Edward in 1296 and had a son and a daughter.

=== Sir John de Montgomerie, seventh of Eagl ===
Sir John de Montgomerie, seventh of Eagleshame (1285-1357), who succeeded his father, Sir John, about 1285. At that time, the lordships of Eagleshame and Eastwood, and indeed the whole of Renfrewshire, were included in Lanark; hence we find this second Sir John designated del Comte de Lanark. When on the death of Margaret of Norway, on her passage to Scotland in 1290, the disastrous competition for the Scottish throne took place between Bruce and Baliol, Sir John was one of the great barons summoned by Edward I of England to meet at Norham Castle, on the English side of the Tweed, to deliverate as to the succession to the Scottish throne, and the relative position of the two kingdoms. In 1296 Sir John and all the principal proprietors in the country were obliged to swear fealty to Edward. But when Bruce asserted the independence of his country, and his own title to the throne, Sir John immediately joined his standard.
Sir John married Janet, daughter of Sir John Erskine of Erskine, and by her had a son and a daughter. [Memorials of Montgomerie I:13]
__________________________
John Montgomerie is the next on record, and appears to have been the son of the preceding. He is first named in a roll of uncertain date, but probably about 1305-6, when his lands and those of two neighbouring proprietors were requested from Edward I by Sir Geoffrey Segrave. It is probably he who acted as Constable of Ayr from April 1303 to January 1303-4, and perhaps longer. Nothing further is known of this member of the Montgomerie family, but he appears to have held the lands of Stair, which were given to his son Alan, and he was dead before 1328, when Alan had a charter of the lands. According to Fraser, his wife was Janet, daughter of Sir John Erskine of Erskine, but no authority is given. [The Scots Peerage III:426]
