  Mathias Besille was the second son of Mathias and Beatrice Bezill. The surname for this family has been spelled number ways with and with the 'de'. He is only called Mathias in he records, never Matthew.
  
  As the law of primogeniture ensured that his older brother John inherited his father's lands, Mathias needed a wife with an inheritance. Lucky for him his uncle Emery Bezill was awarded the custody of the children of John d' Avranches who died in 1259. Mathias married his youngest daughter Elizabeth d' Avranches by 1272. Her land became his land, but could only pass to a child of hers.
  
  Mathias held land in the counties of Somerset, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The manor of Brompton Regis in Somerset was held in frank alamain by the priory of St. Nicholas also know as Barlynch Priory. The priory paid Mathias about 100 shillings out of the manor's annual profits of about 6 pounds. They kept the rest.
  
  The manor Radcot, Oxfordshire was close to their land in Grafton and the estate called West Hall in the parish of Buckland. It was held from the heirs to the manor of Buckland.
  
  Mathias died in 1296 and his heir was his son Thomas. Elizabeth did homage to King Edward I for the land held of him. Her son Thomas was given the land on her death in about 1315.
  
  One of Mathias' descendants was Governor Thomas Dudley of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
