Alexander Nisbet (1722) states: "one of this family accompanied David Earl of Huntingdon, brother of King William the Lion, to the Holy War." (p.344 volume 1). In [Sir Bernard] Burke's 1847 Peerage he is described as the 5th Baron. J.Stewart Smith (1898, p.153) writes: "there is no special record of the family for some years, but in 1188 we again come upon a Robertus de Lavedre among the Scottish nobles who accompanied the [David] Earl of Huntingdon, brother to [King] William the Lion, to the East, to fight beneath the banner of the cross, under the standard of Richard Coeur-de-Lion. It was the Third Crusade. A few hundreds did return to their families and their homes, and among that few was our brave crusader, Robert de Lavedre, who is styled fifth Baron." The writer gives as a source Holinshed, pp.277,278.
