----
Presumably it was through the marriage of Thomas's parents, William and Ela, that the Fitzwilliams acquired Emley, as subtenants of the Manor of Wakefield, then held by Ela's mother, the Warenne heiress. (The Warenne property also included Conisbrough, with its palatial castle, adjacent to Sprotbrough. Did William marry the girl next door?)
Thomas was granted hunting rights in Emley and elsewhere in 1250 and an annual fair at Emley in 1253.
He was alive in 1266 and dead by 1284.[I haven't found the source yet for the 1252 Royton rumour]
He was lord of Emley and Sprotborough and had livery of his land in Riton as early as 23 Feb 1223/24.[CP II:162, sub Bertram]
He was prisoner to the king at the Battle of Chesterfield in 1266.[Plantagenet Ancestry]
His children were: Sir Willam (d before 1295), Denise, Sir Roger (died before 1308), Agnes (died before 1303), Margaret, Aubrey, Berta (died after 1319).
