=== Sir John de Montgomerie of Eaglesham, 12 ===
Sir John de Montgomerie of Eaglesham, 1200-1220 John married Helen daughter and co-heiress of Robert de Kent of Innerswick, thus securing extensive lands and titles. Her father held land under the High Steward of Scotland. John and William of Hanccestertun and Richard his brother, granted as already stated a charter of certain lands in Innerwick to the abbey of Melrose.
=== John de Mundegumbri, third of Eagleshame ===
John de Mundegumbri, third of Eagleshame, and first of Innerwick (1200-1220), succeeded Alan his father about the year 1200. He married Helen, one of the daughters of Robert de Kent of Innerwick in East Lothian, and with her obtained a third part of the estates of Innerwick, which her father held under the High Steward of Scotland. John and William of Hauccestertun, and Richard his brother, granted as already stated a charter of certain lands in Innerwick to the abbey of Melrose about 1170. The seal of John, here engraved, is still appended to this charter. He and his wife Helen, and William de Hauckersont, and his wife and others, as heirs of Robert de Kent, granted a charter of certain lands in the territory of Innerwick to the Abbot and Monks of Kelso about the year 1190. John is a witness to a confirmation charter of Bishop Joceline, concerning four churches granted to the monastery of Paisley between 1175-1199. [Memorials of Montgomerie I:10]
---------------------------------------------
John, who is mentioned as John, son of Alan Montgomery, in a charter relating to the lands of Innerwick, which Sir William Fraser dates about 1170, but which must be much later.* He was then, through his wife, in possession of part of Innerwick. He is named in other writs, sometimes by himself and sometimes with his brother Robert, who is usually placed first. He married Helen, one of the daughters and heiresses of Robert Kent of Innerwick, and apparently held a third part of the barony. Besides the charter of Innerwick above referred to, he, with Helen, his wife, and the other portioners, joined in another grant of the same lands to the monks of Kelso, which was dated in or after 1239, as Philip, Abbot of Jedburgh, who became Abbot in that year is a witness. [The Scots Peerage III:424]
*Sir Paul's confusion occurred because of combining Sir Alan the father of John with Sir Alan the son. (see note under the following Alan)
________________________________
Sir John de Montgomerie, "Miles" of Eaglesham. "He married Helen, one of the daughters and co-heiresses of Robert de Kent of Innerwick, with whom he obtained a part of the estate of her father, which was held under the Steward of Scotland. This appears by a charter on the division of his lands, to which, among others, Alan de Mundegumbrie, son of Sir John, is a witness about 1190. It appears from the endowment charter of Paisley, that the church and tithes of Innerwick were granted to Paisley Abbey, and that the Kents' lands were held in such a way, that the lands of the Montgomeries that paid tithes to Kelso Abbey, must have been other lands at Innerwick, namely, Thorntoun.
