Biography
Lady Elyne of Mar's first marriage to Sir James de Garviach is supported by a 17th century dispute where Sir George Johnston of that Ilk, the first Baronet of Caskieben, as heir and representative of the ancient Garviachs of Caskieben threatened to contest the right of the Erskines to the Earldom and Lordship. Elyne of Mar was the ancestress of the Erskine line. She was said in Sir George Johnston's declaration to have been the grandmother of Margaret de Garviach, the wife of Stephen de Johnston "the Clerk." Sir George subsequently dropped his contention as no distinct evidence of the marriage of Sir James de Garviach with the Lady Elyne of Mar was obtained. In reference to this descent the Johnstons of that Ilk and Caskieben have borne on the 2nd and 3rd quarters of their shield the arms of Mar, Earl of Mar, and of Garviach of Caskieben.
Between 1320-1323, King Robert I granted to Ellen of Mar as his niece, and to John Menteith her husband, lands of Strathgartney. The date "approximately fixed," suggesting their marriage occurred about 1320.
