=== Life Sketch ===
Sir Bryan FitzAlan's first wife. Some references call her Maud others Matilda. Of her inheritance were half of Bedale, half of Askham, two thirds of Bainton, all in Yorkshire, and lands in Bicker, Lincolnshire. Anthony Bek, Bishop of Durham, had granted (in the reign of Edward 1st) to Brian FitzAlan and Maud his wife, entailed, the manor of Bellester, Northumberland, of the forfeited Lordship of Wark, which was recovered by the heir against Miles de Stapleton of Catherston (Carleton?), and John, son of John de Grey of Rotherfield, the heirs of Brian and Maud. She, Maud, had a licence dated 10th April 1340 to alienate in mortmain land in Rokeby for the celebration of service, inter alia, for the soul of John de Grey of Rotherfield. She was also granted the advowson of the church of Rokeby, together with a messuage and a bovate and a half of land, to Egglestone Abbey to celebrate services for her good estate during her lifetime, and for her soul after her death, and for the souls of Brian her husband, their ancestors and heirs, and all the faithful deceased.

Publication: Name: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/229098425/matilda-agnes-fitzalan;
Note: Second wife and widow of Brian FitzAlan (or Fitz Alan) of Bedale.
Year of death approximate: She was still living on 10th April 1340, when she granted the advowson of the church of Rokeby, together with a messuage and a bovate and a half of land, to Egglestone Abbey to celebrate services for her good estate during her lifetime, and for her soul after her death, and for the souls of Brian her husband and John de Grey of Rotherfield, their ancestors and heirs, and all the faithful deceased.
Possibly daughter of John Balliol (c. 1249 – late 1314), King of Scotland, and Isabella de Warenne.
Other sources suggest Matilda was the daughter of John de Balliol (before 1208 – 25 October 1268) and Dervorguilla of Galloway; which would make the king her brother rather than her father.
Her life-size effigy [from her tomb cover] is in the chancel of the church. For many years it was used as the lintel over the door leading to the bell tower, and was moved to the chancel in 1939.
Although her tomb cover is in Danby Wiske Church, there is a claim that the lady is buried in York, but there is no physical evidence of her tomb in York.
The church of the Black Friars at York, which may have been her original burial location, no longer exists.
The supposed site of her burial is shown on the FAG map as York Railway Station.
When and why the tomb cover was moved to Danby Wiske is unknown.
"In the chancel there is a life-size effigy of 'Matilda' who was the widow of Brian Fitz Alan of Bedale c. 1340."

The Visitation of Yorkshire (made in 1563-64, by William Flower, Esq., Norroy King of Arms; edited by Charles Best Norcliffe, M.A., of Langton, London, 1881) has pedigrees of the Stapleton families. On page 295 it is stated that "Agnes doughter and heyr to Sir Bryan Fytzalan, Knight, by Agnes, doughter of the King of Scottes [Barry of eight Or and Gules] married Gylbert Stapleton." A footnote on the same page states that Gilbert's wife's mother was daughter of John Baliol and Devorguil of Galloway.
