Life Sketch
«b»Biography«/b»
Alice was born before 1190 as her father died that year at Tyre while on the Third Crusade.
Alice was the daughter of John, 6th baron of Halton (fitzRichard), Constable of Cheshire, and his wife, Alice. Alice's mother was a cousin of William Mandevyle, earl of Essex, and niece of Aubrey (III) de Vere, earl of Oxford. Alice's father, John, founded the "abby of Stanlaw" in Wirral, Cheshire, in 1178, (which was translated to Whalley in Lancashire in 1296) and among the witnesses to the deed are Hugo de Dutton, Robertus Venator, Adam de Dutton, and Hugo his brother.
Mr Erdeswicke's Booke of Chefhire says Alice married Adam, second son of Sir Hughe of Duttone, knight, lord of Dutton.
Was Alice his first wife? Because between 1163 and 1190, the period when Alice's father, John, was Constable of Chester, he witnessed the deed in which Roger' fil' Aluredi' confirmed to Adam de Dutton in free marriage with Agnete, his daughter, medietate' Werbertune, which was also witnessed by P'or' de Nort' , Hug' d' Dutt', Gauf' d' dutt'. Adam Dutton of Dutton, with the assent of Agnes his wife, made a grant of the moiety of the town of Warburton which was of the fee of Roger Fitz Alfred, to the Premonstratensian canons and St Mary and St Werburg of Warburton, where his son John was buried, which mentions Roger Constable of Chester and was witnessed by Hugh de Dutton and Geoffrey his brother. This grant can be dated to between 1190 when Roger became Constable of Chester upon the death of his father, John, and before 1211 when Roger died.
Lysons' Magna Brittanca also says John de Lacy, Baron of Halton, had a daughter Alice (citing sir Peter Leycester) whom he gave in marriage to Adam de Dutton with Sale and many other manors (citing the Collections of Laurence Bostock and James Chaloner), but as "it is certain that Adam Dutton's wife was named Agnes", the daughter of Roger FitzAlfred, suggests it's not improbable that Alice married Geffrey, son of Adam, as there is no account of Geoffrey's wife in the pedigrees of the Warburton family. Lysons quotes, as confirmation of this conjecture, a deed in Leycester's Antiquities in which John Lacy gives the manor of Clifton to Geffrey Dutton, feilicet de uxore defponfata. In 1187, Geffrey, son of Adam Dutton, ancestor of the Warburton, bestowed the manor of Sale on his gentlemen, Richard Mascie and Thomas Holte, athough the Dr Williamson says the Holtes inherited their moiety of the manor from the family of Sale in the reign of Richard II.

==Biography==Idonea Lacy was the daughter of Sir John de Lacy, 7th Earl of Lincoln, born circa 1192, died 22 July 1240, Magna Carta Surety, and his wife, Margaret de Quincy, born 1208, died before 30 March 1266.[Lewis]
Notes
On the visitation pedigree, below, Idonia is the daughterof Magna Carta John's second wife, Alicia and marries a Roger de Camville. Richardson has Alice as John's first wife, and states there was no issue from that union. He doesn't include a daughter, Idonia, for John, at all. However, he has stated that there are two other daughters. [From: "Douglas Richardson", Subject: Complete Peerage Addition: Children of John de Lacy, Date: 3 Oct 2005 08:52:31 -0700 ]
While she may be one of those unnamed daughters, the source used for her marriage to any Geoffery Dutton, seems to be based on an error.
Marlyn cites Pedigrees of Some of the Emperor Charlemagne's Descendants, Vol. III, p. 168. However, that entry confuses two different John de Lacys and two different Geoffrey Duttons.
Firstly, it calls her "Alice (Idonia) de Lacy". Secondly, it marries her to the Crusader Geoffrey Dutton who dies in 1248.
That would be this Alice, daughter of Crusader, John de Lacy, Magna Carta John's aunt.
There's no evidence "Idonia" married a Geoffrey Dutton, and Alice is, most definitely, not Magna Carta John's daughter.
:"The old Crusader [Geoffrey Dutton] is believed to have married Alice, daughter of John de Lacy, Baron of Halton, by whom he had a son, Geoffrey, who succeeded at his death, about the year 1248, and was in turn the father of a Sir Peter..." [County Families of Lancashire andCheshire, p 219 ]
That Geoffrey is down from Hugh II's son, Adam, not down from his son, Hugh III. !CHECK: It is an interesting coincidence that two different Geoffrey Duttons married a Alice Lacy with the same residence, time period, and father's name (they are cousins). They are not the same person, but it would appear that only one of them could have married her.
