=== Sir John de Chetwynd, his eldest son, se ===
Sir John de Chetwynd, his eldest son, seems to have been of full age in 1202, when in company with his father he attested a charter at Richwardine. At all events he was one of the Knights of Shropshire at the Assizes in November, 1221, though his only concern was a juror in causes of Grand Assize. At the County Assizes in 1226 we meet with a case which illustrates the operation of Serfdom after the Norman Conquest. Sir John was sued by one William Fitz Robert for having dispossessed him of a free tenement in Chetwynd, viz., half a virgate of land which Sir Adam de Chetwynd had given to the plaintiff's father, Robert Fitz Wonram, to hold in fee and inheritance at a rent of 26d per an. John admitted his father's gift, but proved that the plantiff's father had been a villein, though since redeemed from serfdom; but the plaintiff had been born before such redemption. On this the plaintiff withdrew his suit, but being poor was excused the fine, whereupon Chetwynd not only presented him with three marks, but let him go free (ibit quocunque voluerit). Sir John is said to have married a daughter of Robert de Stafford about 1226, but this question will be more properly discussed further on. [The Chetwynds of Ingestre p9]
