=== Life Sketch ===
Parents
Warine (II) de Ralegh was the son of Warine (I) de Ralegh and grandson of Richard de Ralegh. [1]
"This Warine had issue a son of his own name, who was of Nettlecombe in 1242 [2]
Nettlecombe
Nettlecombe, Somerset, was conveyed to Warine, for a whole knight's fee, after his broth Ralph was deprived of it by King John. [1]
"In the time of Henry II, John, son of Gilbert, marshall of England, granted this manor [Nettlecombe] to Hugh de Raleigh, or Raleigh in the county of Devon, and to his heirs, to be held by the service of finding a soldier for two whole months in time of war, and forty days in time of peace, in such manner as barons usually did their serivces..." [2]
"In consideration thereof the said Hugh de Raleigh gave to the said John Mrshal, eighty marks of silver, and a sorrel nag, to his lady an ounce of gold; to his son Gilbert a horse and two dogs; to his son john a talent, and to his other son Walter, another talent of gold. This deed as attested and confirmed under the great seal of King Hmphry de Bohun, William de Botreaux, William Fitzpiers, and others of the first quality." [2]
"Soon after this the said Hugh de Raleigh conveyed Nettlecombe to Warine de Raleigh, (whom he calls his nephew) in consideration of a horse and two dogs, with the same provision of an equivalent in case of defect of title....This deed was executed in the presence of Richard de Raleigh, brothere of the said Hugh, William son of richard de Raleigh, William de Botreaux, and others. [2]
"To Warine de Raleigh, above mentioned, who had the grant of this manor from the said Hugh, succeeded Ralph his son, who 17 John (1215), taking arms with the barons, his lands were seized, and part of them given to William Briewer, who, in consideration of twenty marks of silver, conveyed all his right in them to Warine de Raleigh, brother of the said Ralph, and soon after William Marshall earl of Pembroke confirmed them to him and his heirs, to be held by the service of a whole knight's fee.
Collinson's Four Warines and Birth Year Estimation
Collinson's account of the manor of Nettlecombe refers to four Warines de Raleigh in succession. To avoid confusion, they are listed below, with identifiers:
1. Warine, son of Richard and nephew of Hugh de Raleigh, the original grantee of the barony of Nettlecombe, in Somerset, in the time of Henry II (1154-1189). His uncle Hugh was Sheriff of Devonshire from 7-14 Henry II. (18 December 1160-18 December 1168). Warine's successor at Nettlecombe was Ralph, Warine's son, who took up arms with the barons and had his lands seized. [2] Estimate Hugh as age 40 when he became Sheriff, thus born 1120; estimate his younger brother Richard born 1125, and Richard's son Warine born 1150. This Warin died before 1199 and was succeeded by his son Sir Warine[3]
2. Warine, brother of Ralph, who had been dispossessed. [2] Estimate Ralph born, say, 1175 and Warine born, say, 1180. The Warin who died before 1199 was succeeded by his son Sir Warine who died before 1246. [3]
3. Warine, son of the second Warine, was of Nettlecombe in 1242 and married Margaret. [2]. His father being born, say, 1180, make Warine born 1205 (Currently 1215) and his wife Margaret born 1210 (currently 1170). Sir Warin de Ralegh, son of Sir Warin, died before 1280 and was followed by Sir Simon de Ralegh (d. c. 1284), probably his brother. In a partition of the property, Sir Simon is recorded holding Nettlecombe in 1249. [4]
4. "Warine de Raleigh, the fourth of that name, eldest son of Warine and Lady Margaret, was of Nettlecombe 42 Henry III", (28 October 1257
-27 October 1258). Estimate his birth as, say, 1230. (Currently 1255) He had a son Reginald and daughters Maud and Sarah. [2]
Simon was followed by his son John (d. before 1293) and then by Sir Simon de Ralegh (d. c. 1304), son or brother of John, who received a grant of free warren on his demesne at Nettlecombe in 1304. [5]
Issue
Warine (II) was the father of
Warine (III) de Ralegh, of Nettlecombe 12 Hen II, who married Margaret.[1]
Wimond de Ralegh, who married Constance, daughter and heir of Peter de Chelton of Colleton [1]
Gervase de Ralegh [1]
Simon de Raleigh, shown currently as born about 1223 in Nettlecombe, Somerset, was the son of Warine de Raleigh of Nettlecombe. [6] Sir Simon de Ralegh, of Nettlecombe Court [7] was born 1223 in Nettlecombe, Somerset, England [7] mSimon de Raleigh married Ela de Reigni. She remarried by 1287.[6] Simon is not shown on the pedigree chart of the Visitation of Devon. [1]
